The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring some small human outbreaks of the so-called monkeypox reported in the UK, Spain and Portugal.
What is
It is a virus belonging to the orthopoxvirus family usually associated with travel to West Africa. It usually causes one mild illness which heals spontaneously within a few weeks. There are no specific treatments or vaccines. Incubation usually lasts from 6 to 13 days (but can last up to 21). Distinctive signs are a visible rash (similar to syphilis, herpes, measles), fever, headache, body aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills and fatigue. It is transmitted for close contact with body fluids and fluids (and droplets of saliva) from animals or people, but not easily transmitted. Human smallpox was declared eradicated in 1980, thanks to vaccination, which in the past also helped, as a drug, stop the transmission of monkeypox, for example during the 2003 US epidemic.
The total number of cases reported
In the UK I am 4 additional cases have just been reported, compared to the first 3 reported on 7 May. The four most recent would have all been infected in London, there are no known links of infected people with countries where the virus is endemic. In all, in the UK there are active 7 cases. The Portugal confirmation 5 cases, plus 20 suspects: all in the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley. There Spain noted 8 suspected cases in Madridaccording to the documents seen by main Iberian newspaper, El Pais. It was not possible to identify an epidemiological link between most of the affected people, the newspaper specifies, a sign that demonstrates that there are several unidentified transmission chains of the virus. Researchers led by Amy Gillespie, PhD, at the University of Oxford, Oxford, UK, conducted the online observational study from April 2020 through February 2021, at the height of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, when global stress levels were elevated and the incidence of psychiatric disorders spiked.
Over 2000 participants in the UK recorded information about their current psychiatric symptoms, medications, and other lifestyle factors. They also performed cognitive tasks meant to measure memory, reward, and emotion processing, which are linked to depression vulnerability. One task required participants to identify the emotional expressions of faces, which displayed varying degrees of fear, happiness, sadness, disgust, anger, or fear.
The vast majority of subjects (84%) were not taking either medication, but a small group were taking only statins (4%), only a different class of anti-hypertension medication (6%), or both (5%).
Participants taking statins were less likely to recognize fearful or angry faces and more likely to report them as positive, indicating they had reduced negative emotional bias.
Dr. Gillespie said, “We found that taking a statin medication was associated with significantly lower levels of negative emotional bias when interpreting facial expressions; this was not seen with other medications, such as blood pressure medications.”
“We know that reducing negative emotional bias can be important for the treatment of depression,” said Dr. Gillespie. “Our findings are important as they provide evidence that statins may provide protection against depression. Of particular note, we saw these results during the high-stress context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings also provide the first potential psychological explanation of statins’ mental health benefits,” in that they seem to affect emotion processing. It remains unclear exactly how statins could protect against mental illness, but one possibility is that they may work through anti-inflammatory mechanisms, which have also been implicated in depression.
John Krystal, MD, Editor of Biological Psychiatry, said of the work, “Statins are among the most commonly prescribed medications based on their ability to prevent heart attacks and strokes. These new data raise the possibility that some of their positive effects on health could be mediated by the effects of these drugs on the brain that promote emotional resilience.”
“Researchers should prioritize investigating the possible use of statins as a preventative intervention for depression. Industry 4.0, the clarifications of the Revenue arrive on the tax credits for capital goods 2022

The amount of credit due is equal to:
to the 20 percent of the costfor the portion of investments up to 2.5 million euros;
to the 10 percent of the costfor the portion of investments exceeding € 2.5 million and up to € 10 million;
to the 5 percent of the costfor the share of investments exceeding 10 million euros and up to the maximum limit of total eligible costs of 20 million euros.
For the period from 1st January to 31st December 2022 Instead, the percentages provided for by the previous regime will apply, which provides for the recognition of a tax credit equal to:
to the 40 percent the cost for the portion of investments up to 2.5 million euros;
to the 20 percent the cost for the portion of investments over 2.5 million euros and up to 10 million euros;
to the 10 percent of the cost, for the share of investments exceeding 10 million euros and up to the maximum limit of total eligible costs, equal to 20 million euros.

Il nuovo Saints Row è un progetto che, come una divertente montagna russa, vive di continui alti e bassi nel corso della lunga campagna di comunicazione che ci sta accompagnando fino al momento della sua uscita, prevista per il 23 agosto su PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One e Xbox Series X|S. Fin dal suo reveal si è fatta strada in noi una certa schizofrenia capace allo stesso tempo di generare una sanissima impressione di spassoso divertimento, unita a una spiacevole sensazione di arretratezza: tutto dipende dal punto di osservazione e soprattutto dai video, le immagini e le informazioni che il team di sviluppo, Volition, ha via via distribuito in questi lunghi mesi.
Probabilmente qualcosa deve averlo percepito anche la stessa software house che sta lavorando ininterrottamente sul gioco da almeno 4 anni visto e considerato che sul finire dello scorso anno il gioco è stato improvvisamente rimandato di 6 mesi abbondanti, da febbraio 2022 alla nuova data di fine agosto. Un tempo che evidentemente si è reso necessario per dare più corpo e sostanza a questo audace reboot di una serie che ha saputo offrire alcuni capitoli davvero molto apprezzati, ma che negli anni è stato vittima di un declino inesorabile. O magari il tempo aggiuntivo è servito semplicemente al team per lavorare con maggiore tranquillità in un clima pandemico che ha letteralmente messo a ferro e fuoco l’intero settore dello sviluppo videoludico.
Ciò che però al momento conta è che in questi giorni abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di assistere a una nuova presentazione in anteprima di Saints Row, a neanche un mese di distanza da quella precedente che ci aveva permesso di conoscere con maggiore dettaglio l’elevatissimo grado di personalizzazione dell’editor messo a disposizione dei giocatori per configurare secondo le proprie volontà l’avatar principale, l’intero gruppo di santi, le armi e i veicoli con un grado di dettaglio e varietà che non si è praticamente mai visto in qualsiasi altro open world.
Ed è proprio qui la sfida principale per Volition: riuscire a lasciare un segno in un genere ormai estremamente strutturato e, diciamocela tutta, stantio, abitato da alcuni pesi massimi e apparentemente immobilizzato su una manciata di elementi che soltanto il ciclone Elden Ring è riuscito a far deflagrare. Ma con Saints Row, il nuovo ma anche vecchio Saints Row, ci muoviamo completamente in un’altra direzione rispetto all’opera di From Software per rivolgerci completamente verso un altro pubblico: chi ha voglia di spassarsela con un open world action ad ambientazione moderna e cittadina che vuole a tutti i costi rimanere lontano dai confini “realistici” di un GTA e offrire un clima sopra le righe con la possibilità di affrontare situazioni folli con mezzi e strumenti ancora più assurdi.
L’ultimo ad averci provato con risultati decisamente al di sotto delle aspettative è stato Just Cause 4 e il prossimo su cui puntiamo le nostre fiches è proprio questo Saints Row che siamo tornati ad ammirare stavolta con un approfondimento focalizzato sulla varietà e composizione delle missioni che il giocatore potrà affrontare. Prima di scendere nei dettagli, vi ricordiamo ancora una volta che il gioco potrà essere affrontato interamente in solitaria oppure in co-op con un amico senza soluzione di continuità e con un ulteriore grado di libertà poggiato nelle mani dei giocatori.
Il principio di una storia nota
Una fuga in Saints Row
Come già detto in molteplici occasioni, Saints Row è ambientato in una città inventata di sana pianta, Santo Ileso, ma basata su stili architettonici e scenari tipici del sud-ovest americano: Arizona, Nuovo Messico, Nevada per intenderci. La cittadina è suddivisa in 9 distretti, ognuno con il suo preciso comparto artistico, le attività peculiari e un feeling che punta a stimolare la libera esplorazione con annessi premi e benefici per chi deciderà di dedicare del tempo alla pura arte del girovagare senza meta. L’elemento cardine di questo titolo è la sua natura di reboot e prequel della serie insieme: l’obiettivo di Volition è offrire al giocatore un nuovo punto di partenza per il suo noto e venduto marchio così da stuzzicare sia i vecchi fan che probabilmente apprezzeranno l’idea di assistere e influenzare la nascita dei santi, sia i neofiti che potranno avere a che fare con un open world vergine senza il rischio di non capire determinati riferimenti o non aver noti gli antefatti narrativi.
La storia si aprirà con il protagonista e altri 3 compagni di stanza, tutti appartenenti a fazioni diverse, alle prese con le difficoltà economiche del momento e con l’impossibilità di pagare l’affitto mensile. Questo costringerà i nostri “eroi” a mettere da parte le ostilità e il diverso punto di vista per tentare di creare un nuovo gruppo criminale e arricchirsi alle spalle di chi, fino a quel momento, ha approfittato di loro per far crescere il proprio impero fuorilegge.
Attività secondarie di Saints Row
La presentazione ci ha quindi permesso di assistere ad alcune missioni della campagna principale: nulla di particolarmente originale o innovativo, ma una struttura assolutamente classica per il genere di appartenenza con la solita introduzione a mo’ di cutscene per prendere confidenza con lo scenario e i comprimari, un po’ di chiacchiere, prima una lunga fuga a bordo di un’automobile per cercare di seminare la polizia, quindi un po’ di azione a piedi per far fuori un gruppo di Los Panteros che avevano distrutto la nostra vettura sostitutiva e, infine, un’ulteriore rocambolesca ritirata a bordo di una moto da cross attraverso il deserto di Santo Ileso.
Mentre si combatte si ha accesso all’immancabile ruota delle armi con le bocche di fuoco selezionate e preparate in anticipo nella nostra base, ci sono le capriole per schivare i colpi degli avversari, la possibilità di saltare per sfruttare la verticalità utilizzando nelle fasi più avanzate anche il rampino e la tuta alare, i colpi di grazia ravvicinati e un vasto campionario di avversari che tenteranno di colpirci dalla distanza o di correrci incontro a seconda dello strumento di offesa imbracciato. Non mancano persino dei mini-boss: avversari estremamente coriacei, armati in modo molto aggressivo che ci terranno impegnati a lungo mentre, allo stesso tempo, dovremo tenere sotto controllo il resto dei nemici “standard”.
Sparatorie in Saints Row
Anche mentre si è a bordo dei veicoli tutto sembra rispettare la tradizione degli action open world molto caciaroni: fisica leggerissima, possibilità di sparare anche mentre si è alla guida per cercare di far fuori gli altri autisti quando non abbiamo voglia di massacrarli a suon di sportellate. Non sembra mancare anche un certo effetto elastico per far sì che la nostra eventuale fuga sia meno facile del previsto e che ci sia sempre qualcuno alle nostre calcagna che, chiaramente, aumenterà la sua forza e la sua aggressività, a seconda del nostro livello di notorietà criminale.
Sotto questo duplice aspetto – a piedi e a bordo di un veicolo – quanto abbiamo visto in Saints Row è perfettamente aderente alle nostre aspettative e in linea con tutto quello che abbiamo visto negli open world moderni. Immediato, semplice da gestire, rumoroso, fracassone, all’apparenza molto divertente e senza alcun tipo di contegno sull’esagerazione delle situazioni in cui verremo coinvolti. Tra l’altro, in leggera controtendenza con la palette cromatica adottata, sempre molto colorata e vibrante e in contrasto con un tono molto scanzonato e sopra le righe, il gioco si presenta bello violento nelle sparatorie: il sangue scorre copioso e, anche se non ci sono smembramenti o frattaglie, si percepisce chiaramente la forza dei nostri colpi sui corpi avversari.
Fuga in overboard in Saints Row
Un’altra missione della storia ci ha visti entrare ad armi spianate nel quartier generale dei Los Panteros, prima bombardando dall’alto con un elicottero militare rubato in giro per la città, una sorta di barbecue festivo e successivamente facendoci strada ad armi spianate attraverso la struttura accompagnando e coprendo Neenah, la santa specializzata nei veicoli, mentre tentava di far saltare in aria il garage della fazione criminale così da ridurre drasticamente il parco veicoli.
Durante la presentazione ci è stata mostrata interamente anche una terza missione della campagna, questa volta interconnessa con la fazione degli Idol, il gruppo criminale mascherato e pieno zeppo di luci e neon colorati. Anche in quest’ultimo caso, la struttura ci è apparsa molto tradizionale, ma con tutta una serie di variazioni sul tema per mettere in risalto la natura davvero scanzonata di Saints Row.
Una scena di Saints Row
Il nostro obiettivo ultimo era liberare Kevin, il belloccio dei Santi, ma per arrivare a dove era tenuto prigioniero abbiamo prima dovuto interrogare un bullo scarrozzandolo per la città mentre era rinchiuso in un bagno chimico, quindi abbiamo dovuto distruggere un accampamento sfruttando la medesima toilet collegata alla nostra vettura attraverso un cavo di rimorchio, e poi ce la siamo dovuta cavare a suon di scazzottate e sparatorie con la gang criminale, stando bene attenti anche a disinnescare delle bombe prima dello scadere del tempo così da non far saltare per aria il povero Kevin.
Stando alle parole dello sviluppatore, questo è chiaramente solo un assaggio di una campagna che sarà composta da 25 missioni principali e da una decina di quest secondarie strutturate, più una quantità soverchiante di attività ripetibili, reward relativi all’esplorazione e collezionabili come se piovesse.
Uno smartphone per comandarli
Una fuga di Saints Row
In perfetto stile GTA, nella saccoccia del nostro alter ego avremo sempre a disposizione un comodo smartphone che potremo tirare fuori in qualsiasi momento per avere accesso immediato a tutta l’offerta ludica di Saints Row: dalle missioni ai contatti, dalla gestione di skill e perk alla mappa di Santo Ileso, fino ad arrivare alla personalizzazione estetica e fisica del protagonista che potrà essere effettuata al volo in qualsiasi momento caricando anche eventuali preset preparati in precedenza, così da sentirci magari più “in linea” con l’azione che stiamo per svolgere.
Nell’opera di Volition, infatti, l’ossatura della progressione è spezzettata in un mare di attività che si vanno ad affiancare alla campagna principale per consentire al giocatore di portare avanti la sua personale interazione con il gioco. Da un lato abbiamo le scoperte: micro quest casuali che potremo trovare e svolgere in un attimo girovagando per la città, come ad esempio dei camion blindati da far saltare in aria per raccogliere il bottino trasportato. Ma ci saranno anche missioni più strutturate come le side hustle, delle vere e proprie attività secondarie che potranno essere ripetute in qualsiasi momento per guadagnare soldi, esperienza e sbloccabili e che sono direttamente interconnesse con le attività criminali che abbiamo installato nella città. Ne abbiamo viste 2 in azione durante la presentazione.
L’editor di Saints Row
Partiamo dalle riding shotgun che prevedono la protezione e la scorta di un cliente che ha appena commesso un crimine. A lui spetterà guidare, mentre noi dovremo sparare contro le macchine della polizia sfruttando le armi depositate a bordo del veicolo di fuga. Interessante la possibilità offerta dal gioco di posizionarsi anche sul tetto della vettura per avere più libertà di azione rimanendo però al contempo molto più scoperti. L’altro hustle intravisto si intitola mayhem e può essere sbloccato costruendo l’accampamento per l’addestramento militare che funge da smercio di armi sotto copertura. Questa attività prevede la distruzione del maggior numero possibile di veicoli e oggetti sparsi per strada entro un certo limite di tempo così da guadagnare soldi in funzione del valore delle cose distrutte.
È insomma evidente quanto Saints Row voglia essere esagerato e vario senza però trascurare anche un certo livello di stratificazione della gestione del proprio avatar. Sempre attraverso lo smartphone sarà infatti possibile gestire skill e perk da attivare alla bisogna. Le abilità si sbloccano investendo i punti esperienza guadagnati con le missioni: ne possiamo avere attive 4 per volta e determinano tutta una serie di colpi speciali da utilizzare in battaglia come il pugno di fuoco, una sorta di armatura taser che paralizza chi ci colpisce in corpo a corpo, l’assurdo pineapple express che vede il nostro alter ego piazzare una granata nella tasca di un avversario prima di scaraventarlo contro altri nemici o vetture, bombe fumogene, mine di prossimità, C4 e così via. I perk sono invece bonus passivi che si ottengono completando determinate sfide di gameplay e che ci permettono di sparare con più precisione, guidare con maggiore velocità, avere anche delle resistenze elementali utili contro gli attacchi peculiari delle varie fazioni criminali.
Le personalizzazioni di Saints Row
Ce n’è davvero per tutti i gusti e tutto sembra amalgamarsi alla perfezione con una città che è chiaramente disegnata per offrire numerosi stimoli ed essere perfetta per un attraversamento spensierato a bordo di uno degli 80 veicoli e velivoli disponibili e completamente personalizzabili. Correre a tutta velocità, per poi lanciarsi con un sedile eiettabile, quindi volare con la tuta alare e saltare sulle teste dei pedoni per darsi nuovo slancio prima di atterrare sul tettuccio di una vettura, è un classico esempio di uno spostamento rapido da un obiettivo di una missione a quello successivo. E il fatto che abbiate letto questa frase senza neanche respirare, vi può dare un’idea del gameplay frenetico offerto da Saints Row.
La chiesa dei santi
Qualche esplosione in Saints Row
E poi c’è il nostro quartier generale. Anche questo interconnesso con la progressione del gioco e della storia, è un elemento fondante del nuovo Saints Row, come da tradizione della serie. Procedendo nell’avventura sbloccheremo decorazioni per poter abbellire interni ed esterni e nuove attrezzature per poter potenziare la struttura aggiungendo ad esempio un eliporto, l’armeria o il garage per poter, rispettivamente, utilizzare velivoli, configurare e potenziare tutto l’armamentario da portare in battaglia, gestire e personalizzare i veicoli che ci permetteranno di girovagare tra le strade di Santo Ileso.
La chiesa sarà anche il punto nevralgico per la gestione del nostro impero in ascesa, attraverso l’uso del war table: una mappa dell’intera città con i suoi 9 distretti dove saranno in evidenza i 14 siti che dovremo prima liberare e poi utilizzare per edificare le strutture criminali. Come già detto in precedenza, queste permetteranno sia di accedere a specifici mini giochi, le side hustle che vi abbiamo descritto poco sopra, sia per avere un introito monetario costante e crescente, sia per procedere sul medio e lungo periodo alla conquista definitiva dei quartieri di Santo Ileso così da cacciare le altre fazioni e raggiungere l’epilogo della campagna.
Folli veicoli di Saints Row
Qui probabilmente si annida l’unico vero elemento di originalità di Saints Row: una sorta di progressione in una struttura open world altrimenti molto classica. Poter modificare l’urbanizzazione della città stessa, allo stesso tempo ampliando il gameplay del gioco con nuove attività e opzioni, dovrebbe legare a doppia mandata il senso di avanzamento nel gioco a una costante introduzione di variabili e possibilità aggiuntive così da scongiurare quel pericolo di ripetitività che è solitamente parte integrante di tutti gli open world pieni zeppi di attività secondarie.
Se effettivamente tutto questo mare di contenuti e il suo stile così esagerato riuscirà a far passare in secondo piano un comparto tecnico che continua a tradire la natura cross-gen del progetto e l’aspetto fortemente derivativo di un gameplay che sembra pescare a piene mani da tutto quello che abbiamo già visto in miriadi di altri open world, Saints Row potrebbe davvero spuntarla in un 2022 così povero di uscite di grande spessore.
Dopo l’ennesimo incontro con Saints Row matura sempre più in noi l’idea che i ragazzi di Volition ce la stiano davvero mettendo tutta per offrire un action open world all’altezza delle aspettative. Siamo abbastanza convinti che non ci troveremo di fronte a nulla di realmente rivoluzionario, ma siamo confidenti che la grande mole di contenuti, il tono sopra le righe e l’estrema varietà di situazioni e personalizzazione con cui il giocatore avrà a che fare, potranno far passare in secondo piano una certa timidezza nei confronti dell’innovazione e un comparto tecnico che non appare brillante.

Il nuovo Saints Row è un progetto che, come una divertente montagna russa, vive di continui alti e bassi nel corso della lunga campagna di comunicazione che ci sta accompagnando fino al momento della sua uscita, prevista per il 23 agosto su PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One e Xbox Series X|S. Fin dal suo reveal si è fatta strada in noi una certa schizofrenia capace allo stesso tempo di generare una sanissima impressione di spassoso divertimento, unita a una spiacevole sensazione di arretratezza: tutto dipende dal punto di osservazione e soprattutto dai video, le immagini e le informazioni che il team di sviluppo, Volition, ha via via distribuito in questi lunghi mesi.
Probabilmente qualcosa deve averlo percepito anche la stessa software house che sta lavorando ininterrottamente sul gioco da almeno 4 anni visto e considerato che sul finire dello scorso anno il gioco è stato improvvisamente rimandato di 6 mesi abbondanti, da febbraio 2022 alla nuova data di fine agosto. Un tempo che evidentemente si è reso necessario per dare più corpo e sostanza a questo audace reboot di una serie che ha saputo offrire alcuni capitoli davvero molto apprezzati, ma che negli anni è stato vittima di un declino inesorabile. O magari il tempo aggiuntivo è servito semplicemente al team per lavorare con maggiore tranquillità in un clima pandemico che ha letteralmente messo a ferro e fuoco l’intero settore dello sviluppo videoludico.
Ciò che però al momento conta è che in questi giorni abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di assistere a una nuova presentazione in anteprima di Saints Row, a neanche un mese di distanza da quella precedente che ci aveva permesso di conoscere con maggiore dettaglio l’elevatissimo grado di personalizzazione dell’editor messo a disposizione dei giocatori per configurare secondo le proprie volontà l’avatar principale, l’intero gruppo di santi, le armi e i veicoli con un grado di dettaglio e varietà che non si è praticamente mai visto in qualsiasi altro open world.
Ed è proprio qui la sfida principale per Volition: riuscire a lasciare un segno in un genere ormai estremamente strutturato e, diciamocela tutta, stantio, abitato da alcuni pesi massimi e apparentemente immobilizzato su una manciata di elementi che soltanto il ciclone Elden Ring è riuscito a far deflagrare. Ma con Saints Row, il nuovo ma anche vecchio Saints Row, ci muoviamo completamente in un’altra direzione rispetto all’opera di From Software per rivolgerci completamente verso un altro pubblico: chi ha voglia di spassarsela con un open world action ad ambientazione moderna e cittadina che vuole a tutti i costi rimanere lontano dai confini “realistici” di un GTA e offrire un clima sopra le righe con la possibilità di affrontare situazioni folli con mezzi e strumenti ancora più assurdi.
L’ultimo ad averci provato con risultati decisamente al di sotto delle aspettative è stato Just Cause 4 e il prossimo su cui puntiamo le nostre fiches è proprio questo Saints Row che siamo tornati ad ammirare stavolta con un approfondimento focalizzato sulla varietà e composizione delle missioni che il giocatore potrà affrontare. Prima di scendere nei dettagli, vi ricordiamo ancora una volta che il gioco potrà essere affrontato interamente in solitaria oppure in co-op con un amico senza soluzione di continuità e con un ulteriore grado di libertà poggiato nelle mani dei giocatori.
Il principio di una storia nota
Una fuga in Saints Row
Come già detto in molteplici occasioni, Saints Row è ambientato in una città inventata di sana pianta, Santo Ileso, ma basata su stili architettonici e scenari tipici del sud-ovest americano: Arizona, Nuovo Messico, Nevada per intenderci. La cittadina è suddivisa in 9 distretti, ognuno con il suo preciso comparto artistico, le attività peculiari e un feeling che punta a stimolare la libera esplorazione con annessi premi e benefici per chi deciderà di dedicare del tempo alla pura arte del girovagare senza meta. L’elemento cardine di questo titolo è la sua natura di reboot e prequel della serie insieme: l’obiettivo di Volition è offrire al giocatore un nuovo punto di partenza per il suo noto e venduto marchio così da stuzzicare sia i vecchi fan che probabilmente apprezzeranno l’idea di assistere e influenzare la nascita dei santi, sia i neofiti che potranno avere a che fare con un open world vergine senza il rischio di non capire determinati riferimenti o non aver noti gli antefatti narrativi.
La storia si aprirà con il protagonista e altri 3 compagni di stanza, tutti appartenenti a fazioni diverse, alle prese con le difficoltà economiche del momento e con l’impossibilità di pagare l’affitto mensile. Questo costringerà i nostri “eroi” a mettere da parte le ostilità e il diverso punto di vista per tentare di creare un nuovo gruppo criminale e arricchirsi alle spalle di chi, fino a quel momento, ha approfittato di loro per far crescere il proprio impero fuorilegge.
Attività secondarie di Saints Row
La presentazione ci ha quindi permesso di assistere ad alcune missioni della campagna principale: nulla di particolarmente originale o innovativo, ma una struttura assolutamente classica per il genere di appartenenza con la solita introduzione a mo’ di cutscene per prendere confidenza con lo scenario e i comprimari, un po’ di chiacchiere, prima una lunga fuga a bordo di un’automobile per cercare di seminare la polizia, quindi un po’ di azione a piedi per far fuori un gruppo di Los Panteros che avevano distrutto la nostra vettura sostitutiva e, infine, un’ulteriore rocambolesca ritirata a bordo di una moto da cross attraverso il deserto di Santo Ileso.
Mentre si combatte si ha accesso all’immancabile ruota delle armi con le bocche di fuoco selezionate e preparate in anticipo nella nostra base, ci sono le capriole per schivare i colpi degli avversari, la possibilità di saltare per sfruttare la verticalità utilizzando nelle fasi più avanzate anche il rampino e la tuta alare, i colpi di grazia ravvicinati e un vasto campionario di avversari che tenteranno di colpirci dalla distanza o di correrci incontro a seconda dello strumento di offesa imbracciato. Non mancano persino dei mini-boss: avversari estremamente coriacei, armati in modo molto aggressivo che ci terranno impegnati a lungo mentre, allo stesso tempo, dovremo tenere sotto controllo il resto dei nemici “standard”.
Sparatorie in Saints Row
Anche mentre si è a bordo dei veicoli tutto sembra rispettare la tradizione degli action open world molto caciaroni: fisica leggerissima, possibilità di sparare anche mentre si è alla guida per cercare di far fuori gli altri autisti quando non abbiamo voglia di massacrarli a suon di sportellate. Non sembra mancare anche un certo effetto elastico per far sì che la nostra eventuale fuga sia meno facile del previsto e che ci sia sempre qualcuno alle nostre calcagna che, chiaramente, aumenterà la sua forza e la sua aggressività, a seconda del nostro livello di notorietà criminale.
Sotto questo duplice aspetto – a piedi e a bordo di un veicolo – quanto abbiamo visto in Saints Row è perfettamente aderente alle nostre aspettative e in linea con tutto quello che abbiamo visto negli open world moderni. Immediato, semplice da gestire, rumoroso, fracassone, all’apparenza molto divertente e senza alcun tipo di contegno sull’esagerazione delle situazioni in cui verremo coinvolti. Tra l’altro, in leggera controtendenza con la palette cromatica adottata, sempre molto colorata e vibrante e in contrasto con un tono molto scanzonato e sopra le righe, il gioco si presenta bello violento nelle sparatorie: il sangue scorre copioso e, anche se non ci sono smembramenti o frattaglie, si percepisce chiaramente la forza dei nostri colpi sui corpi avversari.
Fuga in overboard in Saints Row
Un’altra missione della storia ci ha visti entrare ad armi spianate nel quartier generale dei Los Panteros, prima bombardando dall’alto con un elicottero militare rubato in giro per la città, una sorta di barbecue festivo e successivamente facendoci strada ad armi spianate attraverso la struttura accompagnando e coprendo Neenah, la santa specializzata nei veicoli, mentre tentava di far saltare in aria il garage della fazione criminale così da ridurre drasticamente il parco veicoli.
Durante la presentazione ci è stata mostrata interamente anche una terza missione della campagna, questa volta interconnessa con la fazione degli Idol, il gruppo criminale mascherato e pieno zeppo di luci e neon colorati. Anche in quest’ultimo caso, la struttura ci è apparsa molto tradizionale, ma con tutta una serie di variazioni sul tema per mettere in risalto la natura davvero scanzonata di Saints Row.

Il nostro obiettivo ultimo era liberare Kevin, il belloccio dei Santi, ma per arrivare a dove era tenuto prigioniero abbiamo prima dovuto interrogare un bullo scarrozzandolo per la città mentre era rinchiuso in un bagno chimico, quindi abbiamo dovuto distruggere un accampamento sfruttando la medesima toilet collegata alla nostra vettura attraverso un cavo di rimorchio, e poi ce la siamo dovuta cavare a suon di scazzottate e sparatorie con la gang criminale, stando bene attenti anche a disinnescare delle bombe prima dello scadere del tempo così da non far saltare per aria il povero Kevin.
Stando alle parole dello sviluppatore, questo è chiaramente solo un assaggio di una campagna che sarà composta da 25 missioni principali e da una decina di quest secondarie strutturate, più una quantità soverchiante di attività ripetibili, reward relativi all’esplorazione e collezionabili come se piovesse.
Uno smartphone per comandarli
Una fuga di Saints Row
In perfetto stile GTA, nella saccoccia del nostro alter ego avremo sempre a disposizione un comodo smartphone che potremo tirare fuori in qualsiasi momento per avere accesso immediato a tutta l’offerta ludica di Saints Row: dalle missioni ai contatti, dalla gestione di skill e perk alla mappa di Santo Ileso, fino ad arrivare alla personalizzazione estetica e fisica del protagonista che potrà essere effettuata al volo in qualsiasi momento caricando anche eventuali preset preparati in precedenza, così da sentirci magari più “in linea” con l’azione che stiamo per svolgere.
Nell’opera di Volition, infatti, l’ossatura della progressione è spezzettata in un mare di attività che si vanno ad affiancare alla campagna principale per consentire al giocatore di portare avanti la sua personale interazione con il gioco. Da un lato abbiamo le scoperte: micro quest casuali che potremo trovare e svolgere in un attimo girovagando per la città, come ad esempio dei camion blindati da far saltare in aria per raccogliere il bottino trasportato. Ma ci saranno anche missioni più strutturate come le side hustle, delle vere e proprie attività secondarie che potranno essere ripetute in qualsiasi momento per guadagnare soldi, esperienza e sbloccabili e che sono direttamente interconnesse con le attività criminali che abbiamo installato nella città. Ne abbiamo viste 2 in azione durante la presentazione.
L’editor di Saints Row
Partiamo dalle riding shotgun che prevedono la protezione e la scorta di un cliente che ha appena commesso un crimine. A lui spetterà guidare, mentre noi dovremo sparare contro le macchine della polizia sfruttando le armi depositate a bordo del veicolo di fuga. Interessante la possibilità offerta dal gioco di posizionarsi anche sul tetto della vettura per avere più libertà di azione rimanendo però al contempo molto più scoperti. L’altro hustle intravisto si intitola mayhem e può essere sbloccato costruendo l’accampamento per l’addestramento militare che funge da smercio di armi sotto copertura. Questa attività prevede la distruzione del maggior numero possibile di veicoli e oggetti sparsi per strada entro un certo limite di tempo così da guadagnare soldi in funzione del valore delle cose distrutte.
È insomma evidente quanto Saints Row voglia essere esagerato e vario senza però trascurare anche un certo livello di stratificazione della gestione del proprio avatar. Sempre attraverso lo smartphone sarà infatti possibile gestire skill e perk da attivare alla bisogna. Le abilità si sbloccano investendo i punti esperienza guadagnati con le missioni: ne possiamo avere attive 4 per volta e determinano tutta una serie di colpi speciali da utilizzare in battaglia come il pugno di fuoco, una sorta di armatura taser che paralizza chi ci colpisce in corpo a corpo, l’assurdo pineapple express che vede il nostro alter ego piazzare una granata nella tasca di un avversario prima di scaraventarlo contro altri nemici o vetture, bombe fumogene, mine di prossimità, C4 e così via. I perk sono invece bonus passivi che si ottengono completando determinate sfide di gameplay e che ci permettono di sparare con più precisione, guidare con maggiore velocità, avere anche delle resistenze elementali utili contro gli attacchi peculiari delle varie fazioni criminali.
Le personalizzazioni di Saints Row
Ce n’è davvero per tutti i gusti e tutto sembra amalgamarsi alla perfezione con una città che è chiaramente disegnata per offrire numerosi stimoli ed essere perfetta per un attraversamento spensierato a bordo di uno degli 80 veicoli e velivoli disponibili e completamente personalizzabili. Correre a tutta velocità, per poi lanciarsi con un sedile eiettabile, quindi volare con la tuta alare e saltare sulle teste dei pedoni per darsi nuovo slancio prima di atterrare sul tettuccio di una vettura, è un classico esempio di uno spostamento rapido da un obiettivo di una missione a quello successivo. E il fatto che abbiate letto questa frase senza neanche respirare, vi può dare un’idea del gameplay frenetico offerto da Saints Row.

E poi c’è il nostro quartier generale. Anche questo interconnesso con la progressione del gioco e della storia, è un elemento fondante del nuovo Saints Row, come da tradizione della serie. Procedendo nell’avventura sbloccheremo decorazioni per poter abbellire interni ed esterni e nuove attrezzature per poter potenziare la struttura aggiungendo ad esempio un eliporto, l’armeria o il garage per poter, rispettivamente, utilizzare velivoli, configurare e potenziare tutto l’armamentario da portare in battaglia, gestire e personalizzare i veicoli che ci permetteranno di girovagare tra le strade di Santo Ileso.
La chiesa sarà anche il punto nevralgico per la gestione del nostro impero in ascesa, attraverso l’uso del war table: una mappa dell’intera città con i suoi 9 distretti dove saranno in evidenza i 14 siti che dovremo prima liberare e poi utilizzare per edificare le strutture criminali. Come già detto in precedenza, queste permetteranno sia di accedere a specifici mini giochi, le side hustle che vi abbiamo descritto poco sopra, sia per avere un introito monetario costante e crescente, sia per procedere sul medio e lungo periodo alla conquista definitiva dei quartieri di Santo Ileso così da cacciare le altre fazioni e raggiungere l’epilogo della campagna.
Folli veicoli di Saints Row
Qui probabilmente si annida l’unico vero elemento di originalità di Saints Row: una sorta di progressione in una struttura open world altrimenti molto classica. Poter modificare l’urbanizzazione della città stessa, allo stesso tempo ampliando il gameplay del gioco con nuove attività e opzioni, dovrebbe legare a doppia mandata il senso di avanzamento nel gioco a una costante introduzione di variabili e possibilità aggiuntive così da scongiurare quel pericolo di ripetitività che è solitamente parte integrante di tutti gli open world pieni zeppi di attività secondarie.
Se effettivamente tutto questo mare di contenuti e il suo stile così esagerato riuscirà a far passare in secondo piano un comparto tecnico che continua a tradire la natura cross-gen del progetto e l’aspetto fortemente derivativo di un gameplay che sembra pescare a piene mani da tutto quello che abbiamo già visto in miriadi di altri open world, Saints Row potrebbe davvero spuntarla in un 2022 così povero di uscite di grande spessore.

“Death and disability caused by traumatic brain injury is a widespread problem that needs better solutions,” said Nicole Ackermans, PhD, postdoctoral fellow at Icahn Mount Sinai and the study leader. “We showed that animals which regularly engage in headbutting may actually suffer the kind of traumatic brain injury seen in humans. This opens the possibility that by studying these animals we could learn a lot about traumatic brain injury.”
Dr. Ackermans and her colleagues studied the brains of three deceased muskoxen from Greenland and four bighorn sheep, which were obtained from parks in Colorado and Utah and the Buffalo Zoo in New York.
Part of the reason for obtaining brains from these horned animals is that they are known to engage in violent head-to-head collisions, usually in mating and social hierarchy rituals. For instance, male muskoxen often reach speeds of up to 30 miles an hour before impact. Although a few studies have observed symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI), such as acting dazed, none have directly tested whether the brains of muskoxen and other ramming animals show any damage.
The other reason is that bovids — such as cows, sheep, buffalo, gazelles, and the animals in the study — have gyrencephalic, or folded, brains, which are also seen in humans.
“Our lab tries to use evolution to help solve medical mysteries,” said Patrick R. Hof, MD, Professor of Neuroscience at Icahn Mount Sinai and senior author of the study. “One of the difficulties of TBI research is that most of it is performed on smooth, rodent brains. We thought that studying the brains of ramming bovids might provide a better model for understanding TBI in humans.”
When they first arrived, the animals’ brains looked healthy, and brain scans showed that the overall structure of each animal’s brain was intact.
To look for signs of TBI damage, the researchers then cut the brains into thin slices and treated the slices with antibodies made to detect phosphorylated tau proteins found in humans or mice. This form of tau is a hallmark of damage that is often seen in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients, or in people who have suffered TBIs, including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
When they looked at the brains under a microscope, they saw that one of the antibodies stained muskoxen brains at easily detectable levels, whereas the bighorn sheep brains had lightly detectable levels of staining by a different antibody.
“At first we were surprised. One of the challenges with these kinds of studies is that we don’t know whether antibodies used on human and rodents will work on bovid brains,” Dr. Ackermans said. “The fact that we detected these antibodies was important. It suggested that the brains of these animals, especially the muskoxen, sustain TBI-like damage.”
Further analysis supported the idea. For example, the prefrontal cortex of the muskoxen brains had high levels of tau protein tangles, especially near the surface of the cortex.
“This pattern is sometimes seen in the brains of people who suffer from CTE,” Dr. Ackermans said. “Our results open the possibility that these animal’s brains undergo chronic, repetitive damage, as seen in some TBI patients.”
In contrast, when the researchers looked at brain slices from an Alzheimer’s disease patient, they saw a more even and widespread staining pattern.
Curiously, an old female muskox had much more — about 20 times more — staining than the older male and five times more staining than another female. This is the opposite of what the researchers hypothesized, as males are known to ram each other harder and more often than females.
“This study left us with many interesting questions, like: Why did the female muskox brains appear to have more damage than the male ones? Is this because of differences in skull anatomy? Why did the brains of bighorn sheep have so little damage? And is it possible to harness the knowledge we gain from these animals to develop better treatments for TBI?” said Dr. Ackermans.
