On Thursday, a UK-based company that claims to be producing Tom Cruise’s upcoming film in space said it plans to attach the first-ever space movie studio and sports arena to the International Space Station as early as 2024.

Called Space Entertainment Enterprise, or S.E.E., the company also announced it is working with commercial space station builder Axiom Space, which has its own partnership with NASA to build and attach an experimental space station to the ISS. That station is called Axiom Station, and Axiom hopes to launch its first module, called Axiom Hub 1, to the ISS by 2024. The company will then build out the space station before eventually separating it from the ISS in 2028 and making it a free-flying vehicle.

But while Axiom Station is attached to the ISS, S.E.E. plans to attach its own module to the growing space station in December of 2024. Dubbed SEE-1, the module will be available to individuals who want to film or live stream content in space, “including films, television, music, and sports events,” according to a press release announcing the news. Animated videos and images of SEE-1 on the company’s website show the module as a giant white sphere, though there were no available designs of what the interior will look like.

Though the module will belong to S.E.E., it is being built by Axiom Space. According to the S.E.E. press release, it will be an inflatable module that will stretch up to 6 meters, or nearly 20 feet, in diameter. S.E.E. says that it will allow third parties to also use the studio for their own projects. No costs or estimated budgets were provided for the project, nor did S.E.E. detail how much it would charge others to use the studio.

“Adding a dedicated entertainment venue to Axiom Station’s commercial capabilities in the form of SEE-1 will expand the station’s utility as a platform for a global user base and highlight the range of opportunities the new space economy offers,” Michael Suffredini, Axiom’s CEO, said in a statement.

With today’s announcement, S.E.E. also revealed itself to be the production company behind Tom Cruise’s mystery space movie. In 2020, NASA announced that it was working with the famous actor to potentially send him to the International Space Station to film a project. The actor’s ride to space is reportedly SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule, which is used to ferry NASA astronauts to and from the ISS.

Later, NASA confirmed in a podcast that Axiom was going to be involved in getting Tom Cruise to orbit. While Axiom builds space stations, it has also contracted with NASA and SpaceX to buy rides on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon to send private individuals to the ISS. Axiom’s first private astronaut mission on a Crew Dragon, called Axiom-1, is scheduled to take flight in March. However, there’s no set date or confirmation for Tom Cruise’s flight. As for what Cruise plans to film up in the cosmos, all that’s been reported so far is that director Doug Liman is involved and that the film will not be a Mission: Impossible movie.

S.E.E. was co-founded by producers Elena and Dmitry Lesnevsky. Their company boasts an impressive list of consultants of former Viacom and HBO executives. The company says it’s currently looking for investors on the Tom Cruise space project, which Deadline reported in 2020 would have a budget of at least $200 million.

However, it’s possible the budget could be even higher, given how much going to space costs. Just one seat on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is thought to run around $55 million, plus NASA charges additional fees for private astronauts using the space station’s facilities while in orbit. S.E.E. says it plans to conduct a fundraising round soon.

In announcing the new strategy for the management of endometriosis, Emmanuel Macron wished to thank the “Doctor Chrysoula Zacharopoulou for her commitment”. This surgeon and gynecologist by training had asked Julie Gayet to found, in 2015, the association Info-endometriosis in order to sensitize society and the media to this disease associated with very painful menstruation.

A leader of Ovax with a mixed record

Chrysoula Zacharopoulou has been since April 2021 co-chair of the board of shareholders of Covax, a public-private program led by international institutions such as the WHO. Supposed to fight against the vaccine divide between rich and poor countries, this organization, described as “absolute mess” by Yannick Jadot, is criticized for its broken promises. The 2021 goal was to deliver 2 billion doses to countries in need. In fact, only 600 million doses were delivered. Aware of supply difficulties and the lack of vaccine awareness in countries such as “Rwanda or Senegal”, she defends all the same “unprecedented mechanism of international solidarity”.

Limitless and Divergent filmmaker Neil Burger is newly aboard to direct the film, which heralds from Black Bear, Anonymous Content and STX International, which will be selling the hot package at the upcoming virtual EFM.

Ridley will star as Helena, a woman living a seemingly ordinary life, but hiding a dark secret: her father is the infamous “Marsh King,” the man who kept her and her mother captive in the wilderness for years. After a lifetime of trying to escape her past, Helena is forced to face her demons when her father unexpectedly escapes from prison.

Karen Dionne’s novel has been adapted for the screen by The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith. Principal photography is due to get underway this summer in Canada.

Black Bear Pictures’ Teddy Schwarzman (The Imitation Game), Anonymous Content’s Keith Redmon (The Revenant) and Mark L. Smith will produce. Black Bear will finance. STX will distribute in the UK, Ireland and India. CAA Media Finance is handling U.S. rights.

The film has been a long-time passion project for the producers, which initially brought it to market in 2018 in a different configuration. Ridley and Burger should provide the rocket fuel to get it to screen.

Star Wars and Murder On The Orient Express actress Ridley will next to be seen in Doug Liman’s big-canvas sci-fi Chaos Walking.

Burger is well known for directing Divergent, which grossed more than $300M, Limitless, and the The Illusionist. His most recent film, The Upside, grossed more than $100M in North America and was the director’s third number one opening in a row. On the TV side, Burger directed and executive-produced the first two episodes of Billionsfor Showtime.

STX’s movies in production include Guy Ritchie’s Jason Statham action pic currently shooting in the Middle East, JD Dillard’s Korean war epic Devotion (you can read our deep dive on the project here) and Cop Shop, directed by Joe Carnahan and starring Gerard Butler.

The Marsh King’s Daughter falls under the output deal between Black Bear and STX. STXinternational sells and distributes all Black Bear productions overseas, with Black Bear’s sister company, Elevation Pictures, distributing all STX productions and acquisitions in Canada.

Black Bear’s slate includes Martin Campbell’s upcoming thriller Memory starring Liam Neeson and J Blakeson’s upcoming dark thriller I Care A Lot, starring Rosamund Pike who was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress.

Soham El Wardini, mayor of Dakar, in April 2020.

Large brown, green, blue or purple posters with the effigies of the candidates for mayor of Dakar decorate the streets of the capital of Senegal. Every day, until late at night, caravans roam the different districts. The activists whistle, clap their hands, distribute leaflets to passers-by. The sound systems spit out saturated music. It is hard to ignore that Senegalese voters are being called to the polls on Sunday January 23 to elect their mayors.

This local election – initially scheduled for November 2019 but postponed several times – takes on particular significance at the start of a busy electoral calendar. In addition to the municipal (coupled with the departmental), the Senegalese should choose their deputies in the summer of 2022 before the presidential election at the beginning of 2024.

Sunday’s meeting is also the first electoral test for President Macky Sall since his re-election in February 2019, while doubt still hangs over his possible candidacy for a third term. Opposition and power will not fail to scrutinize the results in an attempt to deduce the balance of power between the two camps.

Logically, the battle is particularly tough in the capital which concentrates more than 20% of the 17 million Senegalese. Dakar City Hall has a budget and significant financial resources: local taxes and levies, public grants, etc.

“Becoming a Presidential Figure”

“Historically, the battle has always been hard in Dakar where the mayor can show his abilities and become a presidential figure”, notes Mohamadou Fadel Diop of the West Africa Think Tank (Wathi). ” First, the mayor can act in many areas and it is also a function that offers visibility, during meetings with the mayors of foreign capitals for example adds the researcher.

The symbolic dimension is important in this city held by the opposition since 2009. Macky Sall is the only President of the Republic who has never had the capital, and whoever wins Dakar wins the presidency “says Barthélémy Dias. The observation is not innocent. Barthélémy Dias is one of the favorites in this election under the colors of Yewwi Askan Wi (YAW).

This coalition brings together in particular the parties of Ousmane Sonko – the rising opponent in Senegal and candidate, him, in the regional “capital” of Casamance, Ziguinchor –, and Khalifa Sall. The latter, former mayor of Dakar, was forced to leave office in 2018 following a conviction for “fraud on public funds”. Conviction denounced as a political act by the person concerned, which made him ineligible.

Barthélémy Dias faces six other personalities including Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr, current health minister and majority candidate, Pape Diop, former mayor of Dakar (2002-2009), Doudou Wade of the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) of the former president Abdoulaye Wade and the outgoing mayor Soham El Wardini who has been acting since the forced departure of Khalifa Sall.

“Rise to central power”

« We must win Dakar because it is the first round of the 2024 presidential election that is at stake, while Macky Sall remains vague on the question of the third term “, adds Barthélémy Dias.

The opponent hopes that the Head of State will reveal his intentions after the announcement of the results. More than before, the verdict of this local election will be read as a barometer of public opinion. The voting system has indeed changed. For the first time, voters choose their mayor directly. Neither the newly elected municipal councilors who will appoint him.

« Electoral reform weakens the dictatorship political parties that choose for the people. This procedure allows more to measure the electoral weight of the candidates as individualities », Analyzes Mohamadou Fadel Diop, from Wathi.

The ruling coalition, Benno Bokk Yakaar (BBY), prides itself on its victories in the legislative elections in 2017 and then in the presidential election in 2019. But it criticizes the opposition for giving a national dimension to a local election. ” She wants to use Dakar for her political ascent to central power, but the campaign should not be diverted from this election which is territorial “, explains Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr, candidate of the presidential coalition.

“Capital held hostage”

However, the Minister of Health, an experienced politician, highlights his management of the Covid-19 pandemic to convince the people of Dakar, but assures that he will resign from the government if he is elected mayor.

During the previous municipal election, in 2014, Mimi Touré had failed and lost her place as Prime Minister. Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr had been the only candidate of the BBY coalition to conquer a commune in the capital, that of Yoff. ” The consistency of Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr’s municipal program with the public policies of the majority is a strength “, argues Pape Mahaw Diouf, spokesperson for BBY at the national level. He cites the major transformation projects in Dakar carried out by the State, such as the launch of the regional express train or the rapid transit bus (BRT).

“If the town hall is consistent with the state development project for the capital, everything will be even more efficient “, hopes the spokesperson. Conversely, he accuses the opposition of creating blockages and taking “the capital hostage to make it a political instrument”.

The outgoing mayor, Soham El Wardini, is trying to defend her municipal record. A former protege of Khalifa Sall, she created her own party after being ousted from the opposition YAW coalition, which preferred Barthélémy Dias. ” Thinking that Dakar is a folding seat to get to state functions will hamper the work of the city and slow down projects “, worries the one who was the first woman to reach this level of responsibility.

A fear shared by analyst Mohamadou Fadel Diop. ” Other issues such as the territorialization of public policies or decentralization should be discussed, but they are relegated to the background, after the struggle to monopolize power. Senegalese democracy is trapped by electoral issues “criticizes the researcher.

New delay in the European taxonomy, this classification of sustainable activities which aims to direct private investments towards sectors contributing to reduce greenhouse gases. The delegated act that the Commission has been preparing for several months will not be presented during the last week of January, as planned.

Brussels first wants to make sure that it will not be rejected by the co-legislators. Because, once published, the text can no longer be amended, but the Member States and the European Parliament can oppose it, within four months, by a qualified majority of 20 Member States representing 65% of the population of European Union (EU) for the former, and by a simple majority for the latter.

Since the beginning of the year, the Commission has stepped up contacts with its experts, the Member States and the European Parliament, who had until Friday 21 January to give their feedback.

Berlin has yet to make its position clear

On the side of the Twenty-Seven, the draft delegated act, which provides for nuclear and gas to be included in the list of activities « durables », to the extent that they would contribute to the « transition » towards a green economy, divides. But a circumstantial alliance between the proponents of gas and those of the atom assures him, at this stage, of being adopted. The former, notably Poland and its Eastern European neighbours, need gas to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The latter, led by France, know how to put forward their arguments, at a time when energy prices are soaring and when Europe is committed to respecting the Paris climate agreement of 2015 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

During a meeting in Amiens of European environment ministers on Friday 21 January, Luxembourg and Austria reaffirmed their opposition to the inclusion of nuclear power in the taxonomy and recalled their intention, if the text should not change, to seize the Court of Justice of the EU. The day before, Vienna and Luxembourg had published a letter with Copenhagen and Madrid, in which they ask the Commission to reconsider its plan to grant gas and nuclear power a green label, even on a transitional basis.

Berlin, for the time being, has not made its position clear, as the three coalition parties are so divided: the liberals of the FDP support the Commission’s text, the SPD is against the atom, but can live with gas, and the Greens are hostile to both energies. Nuclear is not “not green energy” ni « durable », nevertheless affirmed, in Amiens on Thursday, Secretary of State Stefan Tidow, while adding that he does not “thought” not only that “weighs on Franco-German relations”. So far, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has not made taxonomy a casus belli with Paris.

Prato launches Tipo: an immersive and experiential project designed for all those who want to discover the new frontier of tourism, the industrial one. In the last weekend of the month, until May 2022, visitors will be guided on an emotional journey which, starting from the beginnings of Prato manufacturing, will lead them to the heart of modern factories, appreciated for the quality and variety of the products and for the investment in production processes that respect nature that have made Prato a city for circularity: one of the most European cities and contemporaries of Italy, young, multicultural and multiethnic by birth, engaged for some years on the themes of urban regeneration and ecological, circular and digital transition. The Tipo project, after an experimentation phase at the end of 2021, is ready to appeal to a wider audience with a program that will run until May 2022 and will resume again after the summer.

“Even if the territory has a textile vocation – comments Eugenio Giani, president of the Tuscany Region – there is a very original cultural profile. The Prato factories tell stories and create artifacts known all over the world. Entering the factories, knowing their history, is a unique experience in Italy. We hope that this expressive tourism of a made in Tuscany can become an example for the other industrial districts ».

Type Prato is a model of contemporary tourism: an “inside and outside” of factories, including cultural events, shows, urban trekking and moments for families, in the city of the Textile Museum, the Pecci center and the Mumat – Vernio textile machinery museum, model of entrepreneurship, care of the environment and cultural planning. Every Saturday of the last weekend of the month Tipo will propose shows in places of textile production usually not open to the public; on Sunday, instead, we will move on the territory, to discover the heritage of industrial architecture and former factories regenerated with urban innovation projects. Educational workshops for children are also scheduled at the Textile Museum, at the Pecci Center and at the Mumat.

«It is a project that speaks of us: it is us, it represents us with our culture – explains the mayor of Prato, Matteo Biffoni – And when the tourist arrives in the city he can explore much more: Filippo Lippi, Palazzo Pretorio, the contemporary art of Pecci ».

On 29 January the stage will thus be that of the Picchi company, with a show by the musician, comedian and blogger Elianto. On January 30 it will be the turn of the Lucchesi wool mill, with workshops for families. On February 26, the Ricceri company will host the journalist Federico Rampini and his show Will we die Chinese ?, a doubly topical theme in a district characterized by a strong presence of companies and immigrants from the great Asian country. On February 27, eyes will be focused on urban regeneration and the transformations undergone by large industrial buildings of the past that have become ‘other’: from the Campolmi center, which in the heart of the city today houses the Textile Museum and the Lazzerini library, to the former Bini wool mill in the court of via Genova, today an effervescent artistic and social reality, up to the former Anonima Calamai, one of the largest industrial complexes in the city, and the Macrolotto Zero.

In March we move to the province: on the 26th at the paper maker of Vaiano, where the musician Fabio Celenza will perform, and on the 27th at the origins of the great Prato textile industry, from the textile machinery museum in Vernio to the former Romei wool mill in Cerbaia and the Forti de La Briglia factory village. All the details on www.tipo.prato.it.

The project is promoted by the Municipality of Prato, the Textile Museum Foundation, the Cdse Foundation for Historical Ethnographic Documentation and by the Municipalities of Cantagallo, Carmignano, Poggio a Caiano, Montemurlo, Vaiano and Vernio in collaboration with Acte (Association of European Textile Communities), Visit Tuscany and Prato Turismo. The artistic direction of the shows is by Fonderia Cultart.

An invitation therefore to visit the other Tuscany, the one outside the usual better-known itineraries.

“Business trips – adds Leonardo Marras, the region’s councilor for tourism – they have transformed: in addition to a commercial event, they need experience. And here the brilliant idea was to turn that factory experience into something popular. The company that opens up does so by embracing safety and transparency: a manifesto of clarity also from the point of view of value identity ».

Even if certain media and research organizations regularly pretend to find out to arouse the curiosity of the public, the case has long been heard: water once flowed on Mars in abundance. It has left its mark in geology where experts see valleys carved out by rivers, deltas or the traces of ancient lakes. It remained to be seen whether the Red Planet, now cold and dry, had been able to accommodate an entire ocean. Published Tuesday, January 18 by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the modeling carried out by a Franco-American team answers in the affirmative.

The scientific dispute around this question is not new, indicates the first author of this article, Frédéric Schmidt, professor at the University of Paris-Saclay: “The controversy started in the 1980s, when shorelines were discovered, and it is still alive. » One of the major arguments against the oceanic thesis consisted in saying that a great sea could not be maintained over time. Located far from the Sun – which distributed less energy in its youth −, the planet Mars perceived, 3 billion years ago, only 30% of the solar flux received by the Earth today and it already had to do very cold. So cold that a possible ocean would not have remained: what would not have frozen would have evaporated and would have been transferred in the form of snow to the high plateaus of the Martian southern hemisphere.

The challenge for the researchers was therefore to find a mechanism to keep the temperature of ancient Mars and its paleo-ocean, located all around the North Pole, at a decent level. ” For it, explains Frédéric Schmidt, you have to start with a fairly obvious thing, add CO2 in order to inflate and warm the atmosphere. But this is not enough. It is also necessary to inject 10% of dihydrogen, which is a much more powerful greenhouse gas. We can thus obtain sufficiently mild temperatures to have liquid water on Mars. »

Warm poleward currents

But that’s not all. To fill an ocean is good; keep it from freezing and manage to keep it full, with a water cycle is better. The authors of the study PNAS modeled ocean circulation to find that “it brought warm currents from the mid-latitudes towards the pole”, adds Frédéric Schmidt. This heat engine is surprisingly efficient, keeping water between 1 and 4.5°C even though the average temperature on Mars is below 0°C. The researchers also showed that the great glaciers of the highlands flowed towards the ocean and brought it enough to compensate for evaporation.

A small mound of clay sits on the table just to Jorge Casbal’s right. He tears off a small chunk and deftly shapes a piece that’s a little larger than a half a tennis ball; this is the base of what will become an átree of life — a tree of life.

He takes another piece of clay and gently rolls it between his hands, forming the central tube, and lays it on the table in front of him. He repeats this several times as he makes the various parts, his hands moving confidently. Nothing is measured, and everything is done by hand.

He knows what he needs to do from years of experience, and he makes it look easy; but it’s not.

“To make the most basic thing, [a person] can learn in about six months, practicing every day,” he said. “It would take about a year in training to make a small tree of Life.

Jorge and his brother Ulises are the owners of Arte Casbal in Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla, which is famous for its polychrome clay — painted clay — and especially its trees of life.

Ulises Casbal works on a clay handcraft. The brothers make a variety of items in painted clay, including ones for Day of the Dead.

The earliest discovered depiction of a Mexican tree of Life is found in the Codex Vindobonensis, a Mixtec parchment believed to have been made a few decades before the arrival of the Spanish in 1519. The Mixtecs occupied an area that is now Oaxaca, Guererro and Puebla.

“In the codex, there is a tree called apoala,” said Jorge, “and it represents the beginning of life, according to the Mixtec culture.” The tree also shows the origin of the Mixtec ruling families and the civilization’s early history.

Mexican indigenous groups have been using clay to make figures and other items for thousands of years. In the country’s central region, unpainted clay figures date from around 1800 BC.

Painted figures appeared much later, first in the Olmec culture. Still later, around AD 800 in Teotihuacán, figures with religious symbols began to appear.

It’s not clear when the first clay tree of Life appeared in Mexico, but the ones that we’re familiar with today — ones that incorporate images and symbols based on Catholic religious icons — appeared after the Conquest. Like many things in Mexico, this indigenous art form has changed over the centuries.

“With the arrival of the Spanish and evangelization, the tree of Life was transformed,” Jorge said. “The Moors invaded Spain, and from there, the Spanish brought Moorish images here, and we use them in our polychrome. Our pieces are a mix of three cultures: Spanish, Moorish and Mixtec, but [the] Mixtec also have an Olmec and Zapotec influence.”

image from the Vindobonensis Codex
The Vindobonensis Codex, a pre-Hispanic pictorial document, displays the apoala tree, whose imagery shows the origins of the Mixtecs’ ruling families.

Making ontrees of life and other figures is a family tradition for Jorge and Ulises that goes back generations. “During the Revolution, the art was being lost, and it was recovered by my grandmother, Catalina Orta, together with Don Aurelio Flores,” said Jorge.

His grandmother taught all her children, including Jorge and Ulises’ father. Unfortunately, their father eventually lost his studio and abandoned the family, but fortunately, he’d taught his wife, Maria Luisa Balbuena Palacios, who is now recognized as a master of the craft. She in turn taught Jorge and Ulises.

The family struggled after their father left. “We lived in extreme poverty,” said Jorge. “Sometimes we had nothing to eat. We went to school, but we were not good students. But little by little, we came to love crafts.”

In 2003, the brothers convinced their mother to let them enter a piece in a competition sponsored by the National Fund for the Development of Handcrafts (Fonart). “Despite being first-timers, we took second place, and that started to change our history,” Jorge said.

Soon afterward, they decided to start their own studio.

“My mother is very traditional, and we made variants,” Jorge explained. “Also, we wanted our own workshop, our own style, and because of this, we wanted our independence. And so we formed Arte Casbal in 2004.”

Jorge Casbal puts together the base of another tree of Life piece.

Before they can start making one of the tree figures, the clay must be prepared over weeks. It starts out essentially as a stone that they first pound and grind and then sift to remove any small stones and other impurities.

The resulting powder is put in a tank of water for a week or two. The water is then removed, leaving behind something that Jorge described as being like a “mole paste” — which the brothers then knead. After all that, the clay’s ready to be sculpted.

Jorge takes all the pieces that are laid out in front of him and gently connects them. He smooths out the spots where the pieces are joined and places the unfinished tree of Life upright. He’ll leave it on a shelf to dry for three or four days before placing it in an oven. The hot air in the oven can crush them.

“Once dry, we put them in an oven at C 800, using something traditional: firewood,” he said. “This is a very long process, and it is a process done absolutely by hand.”

Traditionally, an tree of Life has an image of God on top, as well as Adam and Eve figures and a serpent, although some have strictly secular themes such as animals and nature. In the brothers’ studio, the decorations typically incorporate indigenous designs and symbols.

The sculpture is customarily given to newlyweds “as a symbol that they are wishing the couple a family union that’s prosperous,” said Ulises. “One with many children.”

A small, eight-inch item, like the one Jorge was working on, takes about a week of continuous work to make and costs 1,500 pesos (US $75). At the time of my visit, an assistant was painting a very large, elaborate one that Jorge estimated took 20 days to make and will take another 20 to paint. That one cost 40,000 pesos (nearly US $2,000).

They also sell a variety of other figures, including ones for Day of the Dead.

There were once many more workshops like Arte Casbal in Izúcar de Matamoros. “Now there are 12 family workshops,” said Ulises, “maybe two others.”

The brothers realized that the craft was being lost and began doing what they could to preserve it. “My brother and I undertook to start social networks [promoting the craft],” Ulises continued. “We promote it in fairs.” They also train people.

Still, they and others in their family struggle to keep the knowledge alive and to survive. When asked if they can continue their work, Jorge wasn’t optimistic.

“It depends,” he admitted. “We do it for love, and we will continue. Once, someone asked my cousin if he will continue this work, and he said no. The person asked why. My cousin said, ‘So my children do not die of hunger.’”

• You can view and purchase the brothers’ work at their website or on Facebook and Instagram.
