Jean Michel Jarre is renowned for following all the technological innovations of today and often incorporating them into his music projects. In the same spirit, he prepared a New Year’s Eve show at the turn of 2020 and 2021. The record “Welcome To The Other Side – Live in Notre-Dame VR” is now bringing the action closer.

In the case of this French music magician, we have already seen many special concerts. The most current one used the technological possibilities that his fans transferred to virtual reality (if you had compatible VR glasses). Jean Michel Jarre came up with the concept that he had the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris (with the help of the VRrOOm team) transformed into virtual reality (he was guided by a set of computer games), then his own avatar was created (by the way, the upcoming Abby tour will take place) and in the final he prepared a special, dance-oriented set. Notre-Dame turned into a renowned music club for the occasion, the broadcast began about thirty minutes before midnight and was broadcast live from Studio Gabriel. Jean Michel played his compositions here and the creative team transformed his actions into a virtual simulation.

The mainstays of the whole set are the albums “Electronica 1: The Time Machine” and “Electronica 2: The Heart Of Noise”, including collaborations with Tangerine Dream (“Zero Gravity”), Jeff Mills (“The Architect”) or Armin van Buuren. The stomped “Stardust”, which was created with the latter, then acts as a turning point in the countdown of midnight and is a fitting celebration of the first moments of 2021. Michel breathed new elements, for example by reworking previously published remixes. This is the case with a nipple in the form of the legendary “Oxygene 4”, in which he moved an adaptation from the workshop of the Astral Projection project. The finale belongs to “The Time Machine”, which was created in connection with Boys Noize and in which Jarre will leave for a while speak and his laser harp. The visual of the show plays with views from the outside of the illuminated Notre-Dame Cathedral, which alternates shots of what is happening inside. This corresponds to the individual tracks, so there are changes in the lighting apparatus and pictorial scenery (mostly levitating geometric shapes, or cosmic scenes). The whole grasp honors the majesty of the temple, but at the same time shows how virtual reality can change perceptions and that the transformation of such a space can be an infinite number. It’s a fantastic spectacle – especially gaming enthusiasts will appreciate the views into darker corners. However, it can be assumed that there will be listeners who will not like this pomp and pomp.

The “Welcome To The Other Side” concert set was not the only release by Jean Michel Jarre this year. In addition to him, we also saw his new series “Amazônia”, on which he returned to a tougher work with sound experiments. In many ways, this is a return to the album “En attendant Cousteau” from 1990. The music area again serves its imagination. “Amazônia” became the soundtrack to the exhibition of the same name by the Brazilian photographer and filmmaker Sebastião Salgado, who went to the Amazon rainforest several times and had the selection of films accompanied by this set. Jarre divided the album into nine fictional chapters, in which, in addition to the electronic background, the field recordings of the Geneva Museum of Ethnography (MEG) play an important role. In addition to the hustle and bustle of the forests, he plays with fragments of indigenous songs, rhetorical snippets, choral tunes or the sound of atypical local musical instruments. So in this aspect, don’t expect his more distinctive handwriting with long melodies and building individual layers of synthesizers. “Amazônia” is the backdrop of day and night in the rainforest and focuses more on the individual elements of the day. For good (as in the case of “Welcome To The Other Side”), a download coupon for downloading a special binaural mix for listening in headphones is included. Rating: 7/10

Blu-ray offers, in addition to the video described above, several other bonuses, including a recording in audio form (5.0 mix). For good, there are two blocks of a documentary nature. “Making Of, Behind The Scenes” in the area of fifteen minutes brings the behind-the-scenes of the entire show, including Notre-Dam modeling, rehearsals and presentations to representatives of Paris City Hall. Jarre gradually introduces the whole team and rock fans who participated in the various stages of preparation. They will be pleased to have English subtitles available in this French-speaking review. However, the second film “Masterclass, Forum Des Images” does not have this, and although it is a record of a discussion with the main actor and CEO of VRrOOm, if you do not speak French and Italian, you will not take much away from this over ninety-minute sequence of questions and answers.

“Welcome To The Other Side – Live in Notre-Dame VR” is again in many respects a little further in the creative vision of this musical magician. It started years ago with the visual set “Aero”, since then Jean Michel Jarre has come a long way and continues to show how current technologies can be used, including virtual reality and connectivity around the world. The question remains where (and whether) it will move on. However, this act is a successful reminder of the ingenious celebration of the arrival of the New Year in dance mode. 66876

Hakuna Matata

in Deutschland:

in Europa:

Freiheit leben Stefan Walter

Weihnachtsgeschenke: Ideen bis zur very last minute

geschenkideen last minute

in Deutschland:

in Europa:

Freiheit leben Stefan Walter

Weihnachtsgeschenke: Ideen bis zur very last minute

geschenkideen last minute

The Swiss vote, Sunday, November 28, on the Covid-19 law which made it possible to create the health pass, at the end of a stormy electoral campaign. A sign of unusual tensions in Switzerland, the police blocked the square in front of the seat of government and parliament in Bern on Sunday, in anticipation of the protests.

According to the polls, however, the population should accept the law even if the antivax and antipasse have been able to make their voice heard in recent weeks by organizing numerous demonstrations, sometimes banned and punctuated by violence, but which nevertheless remain far from the real riots in the United States. Netherlands or Guadeloupe.

The rise of tensions in Switzerland, a country renowned for its culture of dialogue and compromise and where referendums are organized several times a year in a peaceful climate, had the effect of an electric shock. Many politicians, including the Minister of Health Alain Berset, who for two years has come to embody the fight against Covid in the Alpine country, have been threatened with death and are now placed under police protection.

This referendum comes as the new Omicron variant, detected in South Africa and described as “Worrying” by the World Health Organization, has plunged the planet into a state of alert.

Lagging behind on immunization coverage

The Swiss also vote on Sunday on a popular initiative on nursing care which calls on the confederation to guarantee a “Appropriate remuneration” care services.

The votes come as Switzerland, like other countries, has experienced an outbreak of infections since mid-October due to the Delta variant. But unlike other countries in the same case, the government has so far refused to toughen national control measures, arguing that the occupancy of intensive care beds by Covid patients was relatively low at this time. day (20%).

“The situation is under control for the moment. If the cases were to increase exponentially, we would have to adapt as we go “Mr. Berset said at a press conference on Wednesday. The government, however, urged the cantons to take action and called on the population to respect basic health measures.

With a rate of fully vaccinated people of around 65%, Switzerland lags behind in vaccination coverage compared to other countries in Western Europe.

This is the second time in less than six months that the population must vote on the Covid law. In June, citizens supported it with 60% of the vote in a first referendum. But the law having been amended to give the authorities more latitude to fight the pandemic and allow the establishment of the Covid certificate, the antipasse decided to launch a second referendum.

“Extreme and unnecessary hardening”

The referendum committee refuses this “Extreme and unnecessary tightening of the Covid law” and in particular denounces the Covid certificate, “Which implicitly induces a forced vaccination”. All political movements, with the exception of the right-wing populist UDC, the country’s largest party, support the law. “Suddenly we’re supposed to be divided between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated. We must refuse this split “, denounced the president of the SVP, Marco Chiesa, who calls for “Restore freedom, fundamental rights and normality”.

The government told him that the certificate facilitates travel and stays abroad, allows demonstrations to be held and is “Available to all” because people who have not been vaccinated and who have not had the virus can be tested.

There are sculptures that you have to look at from afar, in order to better gauge their scale and magnitude. There are others of which we must go around, to grasp their volumes. And then there is this “madness” of six-meter-long brown cardboard by Eva Jospin, which visitors to the Museum of Hunting and Nature in Paris are invited to survey.

From the outside, a ruin eaten away by paper vegetation. Inside, a cabinet of curiosities teeming with tiny wonders, which require you to wear glasses or magnifying glasses. Because you have to get close to the eye to spot in the tangle of cardboard lianas and tracing laces, here shells and copper shavings, there oak cups and fragments of quartz.

This spectacular piece is called Galleria. A word which, in the language of Dante, means indifferently art gallery, tunnel or corridor. In front of her, a huge wall, also dug out of cardboard. Eva Jospin baptized her Matera, from the name of an Italian troglodyte city.

The ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise kicked off on the big screen in 1993 with an unforgettable film directed by Steven Spielberg. The sequels would arrive soon, but there were none from 2001 to 2015, the year of the premiere of ‘Jurassic World’. Its great performance at the box office has resurrected the saga, which returns again with ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’, the sixth installment of it.

With Colin Trevorrow again at the controls and a cast led for the third time in a row by the duo formed by Chris Pratt y Bryce Dallas Howard, ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ aims to be one of the great movie events of 2022. With filming now complete, there is not much left for us to see it.

The history

Universal has not yet released an official synopsis for ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ and everything surrounding the script signed by Emily Carmichael, Derek Connolly y Colin Trevorrow.

'Jurassic World' has resurrected the dynomania, do you remember how it died?

Cast and protagonists of ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are once again the big stars of the film, taking up the characters of Owen Grady y Claire Dearing. The first came to the franchise shortly after becoming a great star thanks to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, thus chaining two great successes that catapulted his career, until then more focused on television with titles such as’ Everwood ‘or’ Parks and Recreation ‘.

For his part, Howard had long before attracted the attention of moviegoers with ‘The Forest’ or ‘Manderlay’, later participating in such popular works as ‘Terminator: Salvation’, ‘Maids and Ladies’ or ‘Rocketman’. In addition, we recently discovered her facet as a director thanks to the series ‘The Mandalorian’, although previously she had already gained experience for staging with other projects.

In addition, ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ will feature the returns of the three protagonists of ‘Jurassic Park’, as Sam Neill, Laura Dern y Jeff Goldblum They will once again get into the shoes of Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcolm. We could already see this last character briefly in ‘Jurassic World: The Fallen Kingdom’, while Neill and Dern had dissociated themselves from the saga after ‘Jurassic Park III’.

The 29 best movie sagas in history

The cast of ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ is completed with the participation of Daniella Pineda (‘Cowboy Bebop’), Campbell Scott, Isabella Sermon, Justice Smith, Omar Sy, DeWanda Wise, Dichen Lachman, Scott Haze, Mamoudou Athie; Dimitri Thivalos, Elva Trill y BD Wong retaking once again the role of Dr. Henry Wu.

Director

Colin Trevorrow

Colin Trevorrow caught the attention of the great Hollywood executives with ‘Security Not Guaranteed’, his first fiction feature film in which he immersed himself in science fiction with enough success that the film won several awards at various festivals. That allowed him to jump into the world of blockbuster with ‘Jurassic World’.

The great success of ‘Jurassic Wold’ quickly launched a sequel that he finally only co-wrote, as Lucasfilm knocked on his door to deal with ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’, although before he had time to take forward ‘The Great Secret Book of Henry’, a film that went quite unnoticed. The question remains as to whether this had any influence on Trevorrow ending up abandoning Episode IX and being replaced by J.J. Abrams.

Shortly after his departure from the Star Wars universe, it was announced that Trevorrow returned to the Jurassic franchise with ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’, a film that he himself described as “the movie I’ve been waiting to make. It has been a pass“.

The filming

The filming of ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ began in February 2020 in Canada, moving shortly after to the United Kingdom. Everything seemed to be going smoothly until the coronavirus it caused filming to come to a halt the following month.

Everything returned to activity in July, being one of the first Hollywood blockbusters to restart filming. This represented a strong outlay for Universal, amounting to about 9 million dollars for everything concerning the security protocols against the coronavirus and for the fact of renting a whole hotel for the team.

The 34 best science fiction movies of all time

All of that resulted in different problems like that Jake Johnson had to abandon the film or the filming in Malta could not count on the actors, as originally planned. In addition, in October there were several positives for coronavirus, which also affected a recording plan that finally came to an end on November 7, 2020. Almost a year later, on November 6, 2021, the arduous post-production work concluded.

Trailer, images and poster

For now we already have a first teaser to whet your appetite, in addition to a Foreword much more extensive that shows the dinosaurs in freedom and invites us to think of a film very different from its two predecessors, without forgetting a first dose of posters.

In a lawsuit, a former SpaceX engineer accused the company of racially motivated discrimination.

Earlier this month, former employee Ajay Reddy filed a lawsuit against the company’s founder, Elon Musk.

He claimed he was paid “significantly” less and suffered serious harassment.

A former Florida SpaceX engineer has accused Elon Musk’s space company Space X of racially motivated discrimination. In a lawsuit, the former employee alleges that other employees in the same role received training and documents that were not available to him.

In early November, Ajay Reddy filed a lawsuit against Space X in state court in Orlando, Florida. On Tuesday, November 9th, 2021, the court issued a subpoena to the company. In the lawsuit, the space company is accused of racially motivated discrimination, discrimination based on national origin, retaliation and breach of contract.

According to the complaint, Ajay Reddy describes himself as an Asian-American citizen of Indian descent. In the document, the former SpaceX engineer stated that he was fired as an engineer in charge of rocket fairing repairs in May 2020. He said he had also filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Florida Commission on Humand Relations. The EEOC is a US federal agency that aims to end discrimination in employment and occupations.

According to SpaceX’s statement to the federal agency, the discrimination alleged by Reddy was not the reason for the termination. Robert Hill, the employee’s final manager, said he was fired because of inappropriate facial expressions he made to an applicant during a group interview. SpaceX stated that these alleged facial expressions made the candidate “extremely uncomfortable”.

Ajay Reddy denies these allegations. His complaint states that he has “been exposed to ongoing and serious harassment throughout his time at SpaceX [gewesen]including (but not limited to) willful mockery, intimidation, impairment of his performance and false statements about his work. “

So far, neither Ajay Reddy’s lawyer nor the space company has responded to comment on Business Insider USA.

The plaintiff is said to have been denied the opportunity to receive training

According to the lawsuit, the former employee worked with two white engineers who had previously been hired to repair space fairings. As part of a rescue program, large parts of launched rockets were repeatedly recovered and restored. In the lawsuit, Reddy writes that he and his two colleagues were initially unfamiliar with the program because it was an entirely new procedure. However, one of his colleagues received several days of training in California, while the other colleague was able to contact the engineers who had designed the system, according to Reddy.

When Reddy also asked for training, it is said to have been denied, the lawsuit said. He then “felt humiliated and isolated”. In addition, the refusal to attend training has “sabotaged his or her job performance”.

The former employee also writes in the lawsuit that his two colleagues, named in the transcript, made costly mistakes that ruined millions of dollars’ worth of equipment. However, according to Reddy, they have never been punished. On the other hand, he would have been punished for similar mistakes, according to the lawsuit. “Management unjustifiably blamed the incidents and outages on the plaintiff during the process [seine Kollegen] took protection no matter how bad their performance was, “wrote the plaintiff.

In addition, the space company discriminated against him by “paying significantly lower remuneration for the same tasks to non-Asian employees in similar positions”. The lawsuit alleges that Reddy suffered “economic losses, psychological pain and suffering, extreme emotional stress, and the loss of the ability to lead a normal life” as a result of his experience at SpaceX. The former SpaceX engineer is demanding reimbursement of legal and expert fees as well as reasonable compensation, the amount of which is to be determined by the state court.

When Robyn Fenty, known to the world as Rihanna, launched Fenty Beauty in 2017, she sought to create a cosmetics company that would make “women everywhere (feel) included.” A perhaps unintended consequence: The beauty line has helped her enter one of the most exclusive ranks in the world: that of billionaires.

Rihanna is now worth $ 1.7 billion, estimates Forbes, making her the richest female singer in the world and second only to Oprah Winfrey as the richest female artist. But it is not her music that has made her so rich. Most of his fortune (an estimated $ 1.4 billion) comes from the value of Fenty Beauty, of which Forbes You can now confirm that you own 50%. Much of the rest lies in her stake in her lingerie company, Savage x Fenty, worth an estimated $ 270 million, and her earnings from her chart-topping career as a musician and actress.

While Barbados-born Rihanna isn’t the only celebrity to leverage her social media presence (she has 101 million followers on Instagram and 102.5 million on Twitter) to build a beauty brand, she is the most successful beauty entrepreneur in the world. do it. Fenty Beauty, which is a 50-50 joint venture with French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH (led by Bernard Arnault, the world’s second-richest person), was launched in 2017 with the goal of inclusion. Their products come in a wide range of colors (foundation is offered in 50 shades, including the darker shades that are harder for women of color to find) and are modeled in their advertising by an equally diverse group of people.

Available online and in Sephora stores, which are also owned by LVMH, the products were an instant hit. By 2018, its first full calendar year, the line was generating more than $ 550 million in annual revenue, according to LVMH, outperforming other celebrity-founded brands like Kylie Jenner’s Kylie Cosmetics, Kim Kardashian West’s KKW Beauty, and the Honest Co. by Jessica Alba.

“Many women felt that there were no lines to suit their skin tone. It was light, medium, medium dark, dark, “says Shannon Coyne, co-founder of consumer products consultancy Bluestock Advisors. “We all know that this is not the case. It was one of the first brands that came out and said: I want to talk to all these different people.

While cosmetics sales slowed during the pandemic, beauty companies are worth as much as ever. Shares of larger beauty conglomerates like Estée Lauder and L’Oréal have rebounded, hitting all-time highs and trading at an impressive 7.5 (or more) times annual revenue. Meanwhile, independent brands like Beautycounter and Charlotte Tilbury signed deals with investment firms earlier this year for valuations in the billions of dollars.

That’s good news for Rihanna. Thanks to the impressive multiples that beauty companies trade at, Fenty Beauty is worth a conservative $ 2.8 billion, estimates Forbes. And all the signs point to the company continuing to grow. In its 2020 annual report, LVMH said that Fenty Skin, which launched last year, had a “very promising start” and “created an unprecedented buzz”, and that Fenty Beauty “maintained its appeal as a leading makeup brand.” .

Fenty Beauty isn’t Rihanna’s only billion dollar brand. In February, her Savage x Fenty lingerie line raised $ 115 million in funding with a valuation of $ 1 billion. Launched in 2018 as a joint venture with TechStyle Fashion Group, the company has top-line investors such as Jay-Z’s Marcy Venture Partners and private equity firm L. Catterton (in which Bernard Arnault is an investor) as shareholders.

Rihanna maintains a 30% ownership stake, estimates Forbes. The latest round of financing will reportedly be used for customer acquisition and retail expansion.

Not that everything Rihanna touches turns to gold. In February, LVMH and Rihanna confirmed in a statement to Forbes that they had closed their other company, a high-end fashion and accessories house also called Fenty. Launched in 2019, Fenty sought to extend Rihanna’s brand of inclusion and offer styles in a variety of sizes. But like many luxury fashion brands, the high-priced line suffered during the pandemic, launching its latest collection in November 2020.

The only complaint some fans may have about her career as a fashion and beauty mogul? It keeps her busy. The singer, who used to release an album almost every year, hasn’t released a new album since 2016’s Anti.

Irvine Welsh (1958) is coming back. In 1996, after the success of the film adaptation of Trainspotting, his first novel, the Scottish author decided to escape from the United Kingdom. Since then Welsh has lived in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Chicago, San Francisco and Miami. The latter city was his final home in the United States, before returning to England, shortly before the pandemic. “I still have a house in Miami. I like spending time there, ”says Welsh from London. “Although I no longer know what will happen in these times.” The author of Trainspotting, yes, says that his life in Miami was passive. Very passive even though one of her friends was also one of her musical heroes: Iggy Pop. “Iggy is a great guy. He is one of the smartest people I have ever met, ”he says. “Well read. Almost a bookworm. Very different from what it is on stage ”.

Irvine Welsh answers these questions on the eve of the next Puerto de Ideas Valparaíso, which will take place virtually between 4 and 9 November. In the context of the Welsh festival, he will have a digital conversation on November 7 (at 8:00 p.m.), which can be viewed free of charge on puertodeideas.cl. In it he will talk about his beginnings, his relationship with music, the state of the counterculture today, and about the books in which he explores the world of Trainspotting. A world that is complemented by a sequel (Porno 2002), a prequel (Skagboys 2012), as well as a spin-off (The Blade Artist 2006).

Born in Edinburgh, at the age of 16 Irvine Welsh dropped out of school and worked for a time repairing televisions. It was the 70s and Margaret Thatcher cut the welfare state in England. Against that backdrop, Welsh left Scotland for punk London. That of the Sex Pistols and The Clash. He was a guitarist and vocalist for a band that received more spit than applause. Then he went through drugs. He was rehabilitated. He went to college and found a rather bureaucratic job. Thus, at night Welsh was a DJ who mixed post-punk (bands like Joy Division and New Order) with the incipient electronic house music. While during the day he dressed in a shirt and jacket to work in an office, one of those jobs that in Trainspotting they parody themselves (“Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a big TV that you shit”).

However, in 1993 everything changed: that year Welsh published Trainspotting. His novel dealt with the life of a group of young heroin addicts, hedonists, drunkards and addicted to football, sex and rock and roll. Three years later director Danny Boyle took it to the movies starring Ewan McGregor, and with a soundtrack that included Iggy Pop, Blur, Underworld and Pulp.

“I was glad it got published. I was hoping it would have some kind of local impact, maybe even Scottish, but not global, ”Welsh recalls of his expectations when posting. Trainspotting. “As a writer, you shouldn’t expect books, or even adaptations, to have an impact or not. It is not something you should be very concerned about at the time of writing. The priority is to produce something that is good because you are the one who is going to live with that book forever ”.

His mother worked as a waitress and his father at the port and later as a carpet seller. You have defined your childhood as a postcard of the Scottish working class. Were there books in your house? What was the meaning of reading in your family?

We lived in a small municipal, state department, so there was no shelf space. But both of my parents were readers and that’s why books from friends and neighbors circulated. I also inherited my Uncle Jack’s, from a government program to encourage reading, and so I became a fan of Evelyn Waugh.

For many readers, his books are like a walk on the dark side of humanity. Let’s say the counterpart of what they read at school. Did it mean reading something similar to you?

Yes, reading was always subversive for me. Reading transported me to other places and I learned different ideas and met new characters. Reading made me want to travel and hate the limits of “socially acceptable.” It’s always good to find things that you wouldn’t put on your school or college reading lists. Most of these lists are conservative literature and perceived as acceptable and decent by people without imagination.

And would you say that has been your creative mantra ever since?

Of course. Literature must challenge, not affirm, lazy bourgeois precepts.

Somehow you took the energy and momentum of punk and post-punk culture and used it for literature. How important has music been in your writing career?

Vital. The energy of punk and house music was crucial in my life and still is. In addition, punk and house needed a literature that lived up to that enthusiasm and I made an effort to provide it.

Trainspotting is a book about the Scottish working class. Or about the children of the working class. And these days a lot of people of that class vote for a populist right. What would happen to Mark, Sick Boy, Begbie and Spud? What would the characters of Trainspotting?

Not in Scotland. Everyone in Scotland thinks Johnson is a bastard. And as for my characters, they would all think the same as me. That Brexit is a scam for the rich to further deceive the working classes.

Don’t you think Donald Trump, and to some extent Boris Johnson, use some elements that punk and post-punk also used? I mean satire, parody, irony, and even ‘punk’ as a transgressive force. Has the counterculture been hijacked by the populist right?

No. Today there is no counterculture. Those politicians you mention have adopted “shock” tactics. But they have only done so for two reasons. One, because the “left” has become a group of middle-class “bed-wetters”. And, two, as I told you, because there is no counterculture. Today there is no street culture. Only the media. That is why politicians like Johnson can sit in their corridors at Oxford and invent racist, class and sexist shit, and pass it off as “subversive.” And since there is no street culture, street mass culture, now they don’t need anyone to approve of them. Now everything is for social networks and these can be falsified. I know. All of this sounds like a lousy Bernard Manning comedy from the 1970s. One recited with glee by those class-conscious wealthy men, and distributed among those stunned and stunned masses that they themselves oppress.

Has returned to Trainspotting for a prequel, a sequel and also for a spin-off. Why do you return to that world over and over again?

By the characters. Mark, Sick Boy, Begbie and Spud. I want to know what happens to their lives.

Since the opening of her trial on September 8, Elizabeth Holmes has arrived at federal court in San José, California every morning, supervised by her mother and her husband, Billy Evans, the son of a hotel mogul from San Diego, who each hold his hand. Tuesday, November 23 was no exception.

If this was one of the most important days for the outcome of a case that could earn her up to twenty years in prison, the former boss of Theranos has shown nothing. Impassive, she went through security, along the line of journalists, lined up for hours in order of arrival. There are only about 30 seats in the courtroom and the trial is not shown on television.

Elizabeth Holmes, 37, is accused of fooling investors and patients into believing that Theranos, her start-up founded in 2003, had found a method that would revolutionize blood testing. In an exuberant Silicon Valley, Theranos had been valued up to $ 9 billion in 2014, without ever having demonstrated results. Intoxicated by the surge in her notoriety, Elisabeth Holmes dressed like Steve Jobs, in a black turtleneck, and let it be said that she had invented “The health care iPod” : a small device called “Edison”, supposedly capable of performing more than 200 different tests, from a single drop of blood. Declared bankrupt in 2018, Theranos has become the symbol of the hubris of Silicon Valley.

Smiling and sure of herself

Elizabeth Holmes appeared in court for the third time on Tuesday. The previous days, she had rather scored points, by recounting her journey as a young girl in a hurry, so motivated by her project of “Democratize health” that she had left her studies as a chemical engineer at Stanford in the second year. Confident of herself, sometimes smiling, she had answered firmly to the question which is at the center of the trial: what did she know about the poor performance of the technology whose merits she praised to investors. “Were you convinced that Theranos had developed a technology that could perform any blood test? “, one of his lawyers asked him on Friday. ” I was “, she assured.

Tuesday’s hearing was much less favorable. The former Silicon Valley superstar, who faces eleven fraud charges, admitted that she personally included the logo of pharmaceutical giants Pfizer and Schering-Plow on brochures sent to potential investors. This, without their agreement, when they had not validated its technology. She said her intention was not to mislead anyone. “I wish I had acted differently”, she confessed.
