– This session will be held on January 25 and will be dedicated to how cinema can strengthen human rights movements, and thus contribute to establishing a fairer world

The fourth edition of FIFDH Impact Days, the special program on impact strategies for documentaries at any stage of their production, recently announced the 16 projects selected this year (read the article). The initiative, which will be held on March 7 and 8 as part of the 20th Geneva International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH), also includes a preparatory stage: Impact Lab, an online workshop for participants.

(The article continues below – Commercial information)

During the Impact Lab phase and inside the dedicated observer stream, a special webinar will focus on “Making Impact Films Dealing with Human Rights”, where an extensive gallery of international experts and seasoned filmmakers will share their experiences and know-how on how films can contribute to changing minds, behaviors and established structures when they are linked to strategic agents of change. This webinar will be free for a limited number of professionals and will be held on January 25 from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. CET. Those wishing to attend can register for free here.

As for the content of the webinar itself, Laura Longobardi, who runs Impact and Industry, will welcome attendees, after which an introductory keynote will be delivered by the impact film producer and founder of Looky Looky Pictures Ani Mercedes. The talk is titled “Telling vs Being What It’s Told: Three Things Filmmakers Do to Have Transformational (Not Transactional) Impact Campaigns.”

Ensuite, Nicole van Schaik, Director of Development at Doc Society, will present recent cases of successful impact campaigns from her experience of developing strategies with film writers and impact film producers on how they can use their films as strategic tools for social or environmental change. The next presentation will be that of Naomi Walker, the first coordinator of the GIPA – Global Impact Producers Assembly, who will answer the question: “What is an impact producer and what is GIPA?”.

The webinar will be complemented by a discussion on the topic “How to create a more sustainable ecosystem in terms of funding impact films in these times of crisis?”, moderated by Naomi Walker. The debate will bring together Mertes way, Founder and Director of International Resource for Impact and Storytelling (IRIS), Human Rights Advocate, Producer and Designer of Impact Strategies Rebecca Lichtenfeld, which runs the InMaat Foundation, and Rasmus Steen, who heads the documentary arm of International Media Support (IMS).

The Impact Days program, which will unfold on March 7 and 8 and will offer discussions, professional meetings, masterclasses and networking opportunities for film writers, impact film producers and changemakers, is underway of elaboration. More details will be announced soon.

After Don’t Look Up, Adam McKay will take control of the production of a film on the Capitol of the United States, assaulted on January 6, 2021.

After the dithyrambic scores of Don’t Look Up: Cosmic Denial, which led it to position itself as Netflix’s second most viewed film, Adam McKay’s Hollywood rating would (again) skyrocket, and unlock new horizons for him. This is the case with his next production, although it is not so different from his last film.

The director of the cosmic-negationist comedy will put on his producer cap to help his fellow director, Billy Ray, who seems to have a less funny vision of the future of the United States lately. Together, they are going to develop the film called J6, which traces the assault on the Capitol, January 6, 2021.

As a reminder, on December 4, 2020, the electors declared Joe Biden the winner, but suspicions of fraud (in particular because of postal voting) interfered with the verdict, and postponed the deadline. Time passes and America holds its breath. As 2021 opens, the issue is nearly resolved and still gives Biden the winner.

On January 6, 2021, supporters of Donald Trump storm the Capitol, believing that justice has not done its job, that the fraud is real and that Biden will cheat with impunity. The objective is to occupy the monument and prevent the certification of the results of the vote. The riot, considered by the American media as one of the biggest attacks on democracy since the Civil War, shook the country, but also Billy Ray, according to what reported Deadline.

A normal day in the United States

The American director, who recently distinguished himself in the mini-series The Comey Rule (which deals with Trump’s US presidency), allegedly collected testimony from police officers and congressmen who faced the wrath of rioters, whose violence had been condemned by Trump. With these exchanges, the director clarified his intention:

“My aim is to provide a vision of a small point of view in the midst of such a monumental day. It’s about protesters who become rioters, and police who become defenders of democracy. We could tell you tell this from the perspective of the White House, but I want us to be in the trenches, in the heart of the event.”

Not too much on the program

In other words, the comedy of Don’t Look Up shouldn’t be there. Ray has also confided that he collaborated with Adam McKay following a meeting with Cullen Hoback, who had made an HBO documentary on the group Qanon (Q: Into the Storm), proponent of conspiracy theories about the existence of an American deep state (an elite minority that wants to eventually rule the world, Illuminati style). Hoback advised Ray to turn to McKay, who had produced his documentary.

Hoback also praised Ray’s vision, believing that “His desire for a journalistic approach will make it more difficult for opportunistic politicians to rewrite history as it suits them”, and McKay thinks the director has “writes a harrowing and terrifying script, which will become the ultimate cinematic documentary of this event”. In other words, the bar is set high.

Brendan Gleeson en Donald Trump dans The Comey Rule

J6, originally planned as a miniseries for Showtime, became a movie. Truth be told, the team would be looking to negotiate its distribution model, so it’s unclear whether the film will be on the small or big screen (but given the origin of the project and the way it presents, it seems more likely that it ends up on a streaming platform). In fact, regarding the casting or a possible release date, we have no news.

In The Favorite, the American actor will lend his features to King Louis XV. Filming is scheduled for this summer in the Paris region and at the Palace of Versailles.

According to information reported by Satellifacts, Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean, Edward Scissorhands, Dead Man) is about to return to the big screen in the new film by Maïwenn, the director of Police (2011), My king (2015) and more recently ADN (2020). Certainly a turning point in the career of the actor, whose latest films (Minimata, Waiting for the Barbarians and polar City of Lies) were released directly on VOD without going through the cinema box.

Since his highly publicized divorce and his lost defamation lawsuit against the English tabloid The Sun, who accused him of being a a womanizer “Following statements by actress Amber Heard (ex-wife of the actor), Johnny Depp was blacklisted from all major Hollywood productions, as evidenced by his eviction from franchises Pirates of the Caribbean and fantastic animals (Mads Mikkelsen reprized his role of Grindelwald for the latest installment in the saga from the universe ofHarry Potter). Depp now considers himself boycotted by Hollywood and continues to claim his innocence. At the same time, the fallen star has started defamation proceedings against Amber Heard, this time in the United States. The trial will be held next April.

The Favorite – whose title is necessarily reminiscent of the eponymous film by Yorgos Lanthimos (with Emma Stone, Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz) which takes place around the same time – will focus on Jeanne du Barry, last love of Louis XV, guillotined during the Revolution. The film will be produced by Why Not Productions and distributed by Le Pacte. This new project marks the first big role in a French film for the American actor, who had made a small appearance in the past in They got married and had many children (2004) by Yvan Attal. Relatively discreet lately, Johnny Depp appeared last September at the Deauville American Film Festival, where he came to defend his film City of Lies (2017), chronicling the investigation into the assassinations of 2Pac and Notorious BIG

Netflix releases a number of films and series in its catalog each week, without anyone noticing them or the platform officially announcing it. Ecran Large looks back at the new features added by Netflix from January 21 to 27, 2022, films and series combined in a non-exhaustive list.

What are the films and series not to be missed this weekend on the streaming platform?

ozark season 4 part 1

Available on Netflix – Duration: 7 episodes of approximately 1 hour

What does it talk about ? Marty and Wendy find themselves faced with an ambiguous proposition, while Ruth goes it alone, Jonah rebels and Omar’s nephew comes forward.

Why do you have to watch it? Because the Netflix series, which is fast approaching its conclusion, is probably the most worthy descendant of Breaking Bad, or at the very least the series that will have best digested the lessons, and been able to recycle the strong points. The proof with this first part of season 4, which pushes all the protagonists to their last entrenchment, by effectively reversing the initial logic.

Indeed, since the first episode of their murderous adventures, the Byrde clan had to struggle to massively launder the money of a cartel ready to massacre them. When the big boss asks them to help him regain his virginity, it’s their whole organization that is turned upside down. The result ? A series of episodes that are still just as effective and mastered narratively, where our heroes are still struggling a little more to remain united, which could prove to be the most fatal of poisons. the munich vise

Available on Netflix – Duration: 2h11

What does it talk about ? 1938. The tension is palpable at the Munich conference. Two former friends working for opposing governments work behind the scenes to expose a Nazi secret.

Why do you have to watch it? Because The Vise of Munich allows us to find Jeremy Irons, shortly after the complicated Zack Snyder’s Justice League and House of Gucci. In the same way, it will be an opportunity to see actor George MacKay, who really distinguished himself in Captain Fantastic, Le Gang Kelly and more recently in 1917 by Sam Mendes. The actor Jannis Niewöhner, whom we met in Mute by Duncan Jones and in the trilogy of gems by Felix Fuchssteiner, will complete this leading trio.

As for the staging, it’s Christian Schwochow (On the other side of the wall, Paula and some episodes of The Crown) who led the fine team in the service of a screenplay written by Ben Power (The Hollow Crown), adapted from a novel by Robert Harris (Pompei, The Second Sleep and V2, also co-writer of The Ghost Writer and you J’accuse by Roman Polansky). This pretty team gives us a spy thriller that takes place at the time of the Munich agreements, a postulate on paper that is quite promising.

Our review of The Munich State

massacre at boarding school

On Netflix January 22 – Duration: 1h44

What does it talk about ? A teenager is looking for his place in a prestigious school, until the day when a crater forms at the level of a nearby hydraulic fracturing site, sowing terror.

Why do you have to watch it? The trailer for this Slaughterhouse Rulez (original title) had had little effect at the time. Those nostalgic for the Cornetto trilogy were thrilled to see Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunited, the younger ones waiting to see Asa Butterfield from Sex Education, Hugo Cabret and Ender’s Game in an R-rated film and everyone was looking forward to a new English horror comedy, filled with phlegm and big monsters.

Since then, the soufflé has fallen off a bit, mainly because the result is very forgettable. Not only Residential School Massacre proves too light for his own good (we smile more than we laugh), but he waits almost 50 minutes before unleashing the hounds of hell. And it’s not the few final gory effects that saved it from tripaille followers. It still has its place on Netflix, where the harmless entertainment that it is will find an audience less accustomed to the genre.

Our quick opinion on Residential School Massacre

snowpiercer season 3

On Netflix from January 25 – Duration: 10 episodes of approximately 50 minutes, starting one per week

What does it talk about ? As Wilford emphasizes his reign aboard his icy train, Layton’s pirate train continues its dangerous quest and stumbles upon something completely unexpected.

Why do you have to watch it? To continue to follow the adventures of Layton and Wilford, who are now on their own. The very television format of the series, not very suitable for its subject, was compensated in season 2 by the presence of a Sean Bean in full possession of his faculties. We must recognize the screenwriters of this new adaptation a desire to finally move their world forward, with the few recent revelations.

Good news: the psychopathic guru version of Wilford is still there, snug in his new train, and we can even guess the return of Melanie Cavill, who has disappeared without too much conviction. Perhaps the funny narrative I don’t care about in the last episodes will be pushed even further, so that Snowpiercer finally fulfills his destiny: become a wonky but regressive sci-fi B series.

Our review of season 2 of Snowpiercer

neymar, the perfect chaos

On Netflix January 25, 2022 – Duration: 3 episodes of approximately 40 minutes

Neymar, the perfect chaos : photo, Neymar, the perfect chaosBig smiles, or big anger, Neymar Jr does not do in moderation

What does it talk about ? Revered around the world but also criticized, Neymar shares the ups and downs of his personal life and his brilliant football career.

Why do you have to watch it? At Ecran Large, we don’t know much about football, but we like documentaries. Of Last Chance U at Formula 1, sports documentaries are on the rise, and Netflix seems to have mastered the exercise. This time it’s about one of the biggest stars of one of the most popular sports in the world: Neymar Jr.. Transferred for 222 million euros to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, the sportsman had a dazzling career in his native Brazil. The celebrity came with its share of criticism for its bling-bling side or the frequency of its injuries.

In addition to moments of anthology of football or escapades off the field, Neymar, the perfect chaos offers interviews with some of the greatest players in the world, M’Bappé, Beckham, Messi in the first place. The opportunity to see these celebrities talk about the history of football, the legend of King Pelé, and the new monster of Brazilian football. For neophytes like us, it’s always an opportunity to understand the phenomenon.

chosen

On Netflix January 27, 2022 – Duration: 6 episodes

What does it talk about ? The life of a 17-year-old Danish girl changes when she discovers with her friends the disturbing truth that hides in their small town without history.

Why do you have to watch it? Trip halfway between teen drama and sci-fi thriller, Chosen is a very curious object. With the trailer for this series, we are suggested a little bit of everything and its opposite, in terms of atmosphere, and that suggests something as interesting as a headache. One could even see in it a kind of somewhat bastardized genesis of X-Men or of Chronicle.

The showrunner, Dallas Jenkins, previously directed the series named… The Chosen (everything was planned), which detailed the life of Jesus Christ. At Chicago Sun Times, the author declared that if we could eat eight seasons of Game of Thrones in a row, then we could well enjoy eight seasons of Christic journey. Not that it helps Chosen to know that, but it would seem that Jenkins warmly invites you to peek at his work.

But also…

The Gift, Stuck, Me, Georgina, Aziz Ansari: Nightclub Comedian, Three Songs for Benazir…

These two cult animation franchises will soon return to Netflix. The platform has even just confirmed the title of one of these two sequels, and revealed a release date for 2023. These two licenses have brought glory to Aardman Animations studios, and will therefore soon return to the spotlight.

Aardman Animations: the childhood studio

Founded in 1972, the Aardman animation studio has delighted an entire generation. Of British origin, this studio was created by David Sproxton and Peter Lord. Aardman Animations became known for their unique visual style. Popularized by director Nick Park, studio Aardman uses the stop-motion technique coupled with modeling clay animation.

Among their big successes, we can obviously mention the saga Wallace et Gromit. First in short films, then in feature films, Wallace and Gromit became the muses of the Ardman studio. Besides this iconic duo, Aardman studios have also produced a few other classics like Chicken Run, Mouse City, Shaun the Sheep or even more recently Cro Man.

Back on Netflix

We have known for some time that Aardman studios are preparing a sequel to Chicken Run. A second opus which will be released (unfortunately?) directly on the Netflix platform. Entitled Chicken Run : Dawn of the Nugget, the feature film will be directed by Sam Fell (Norman’s Strange Power) and will be a follow-up to the Nick Park classic released in 2000. The platform recently confirmed that the work will be released in its catalog in 2023. Along with that title and release date, Netflix also shared the very first image from the film:

The CHICKEN RUN sequel is coming, and it’s called… CHICKEN RUN: DAWN OF THE NUGGET. Hatching only on Netflix in 2023. pic.twitter.com/cSFCYM966Q

January 20, 2022

A first image which brings back Ginger and Rocky, the two emblematic characters of the first opus. Apparently, the couple is waiting here for their first chick, who will be called Molly. According to Netflix, this sequel will take place almost instantly after the events of the first installment. The chickens are finally living in peace in their sanctuary. The adventure begins when something horrible threatens to destroy the rest of the species chicken across the entire continent. As for Molly, the new character in the saga, she should be at the center of the plot.

In addition to Chicken Run 2, Netflix and Aardman Animations are also preparing to bring Wallace and Gromit back to the fore. According to Deadline, the iconic duo will return for a new film. This animated feature film, which has no title yet, will be directed by cult Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park himself. In the evening broadcast on the BBC during 2024 UK and will be available on Netflix in the rest of the world.

The plot will follow the concerns of the dog Gromit, worried that Wallace has become too dependent on his inventions. His fears are confirmed when Wallace invents an intelligent gnome which he uses to do all his thankless tasks. Corn this creation develops its own consciousness and rebels against its creator. A funny re-reading of the Frankenstein myth. In any case, this is very good news for fans of Aardman Animations!

After his legal problems, the actor Johnny Depp will make his return, but this time in France.

Having started in the mid-1980s with a secondary role – but a memorable death – in The Claws of Night by Wes Craven, actor Johnny Depp’s career exploded in 1990 with Cry-Baby by John Waters and Edward Scissorhands by Tim Burton. By becoming the latter’s favorite actor – with extensive collaboration on eight of his feature films – and also starring for Emir Kusturica, Jim Jarmusch, Terry Gilliam, Roman Polanski and Michael Mann, among others, the actor has truly become a global star.

Except that following his separation in 2016 with actress Amber Heard, the interpreter of Jack Sparrow was accused by his ex-wife of domestic violence. And since then, this case has necessarily had consequences for the career of the actor, as evidenced by his dismissal from the film Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets. But Depp has more than one trick up his sleeve, and to return to the front of the stage the actor is about to make his comeback with a new film… made in France.

The release of Johnny Depp’s career?

Indeed, according to Satellifacts, Johnny Depp is going to be the main role of Maïwenn’s new film. The actor will interpret Louis XV there in a film produced by Why Not Productions – which edited the filmmaker’s last film, ADN – in a shoot that will begin on July 8 in the Paris region, but also at the Château de Versailles.

This film will mark the return of the actor, a few years after his last shoot in 2019 for the film Minamata by Andrew Levitas, a biopic about American photographer William Eugene Smith. In France the film was released on VOD, in the same way as Waiting for the Barbarians when The Last Days of Mr. Brown was released on Amazon Prime Video. All this to say that we haven’t seen Johnny Depp’s face on a French cinema screen since the release in 2018 of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

A casting choice that is sure to divide

Remember that the actor had already made an appearance in a French film in the They got married and had many children by Yvan Attal, where he made a brief cameo. Maiwenn, meanwhile, will sign here sixth feature film, after in particular Police and My king, the first having received a jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011.

We don’t yet know what the title of the film will be, but Johnny Depp will play King Louis XV against a Maïwenn who will herself play the king’s last mistress. It will therefore be a historical biopic, the first film in costume for the filmmaker. Add to that the director’s talent for directing actors and l’surprising encounter of his universe with that of the actor is all the more exciting.

We will therefore have to wait very wisely for the end of the production of the film to find out what will happen, in a movie theater this time – if a platform does not recover it.

As the global box office and movie releases have been slowly but steadily increasing since September, the appearance of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 and its rapid spread across the world has dealt another blow to the movie industry. Once again, the momentum of a recovery is disrupted and uncertainty returns. Unlike other waves, this time the closure of cinemas was not an obvious choice. de facto : if cinemas are effectively shut down in December 2021 (in Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands and Slovakia among others), the majority of States have chosen to keep them open, but have tightened the conditions for access (vaccination pass, FFP2 mask, sale of prohibited confectionery or even reintroduction of gauges). Inevitably, attendance slowed and viewers turned to a handful of films, including the latest episode of Spider-Man (Sony), further widening the box office gap between the titles on offer. Consequently, also taking into account the fact that the epidemic peak has not been reached, many releases, mainly of films with high potential, are postponed. The new year therefore opens with a feeling of déjà vu.

Despite the difficulties just mentioned, French cinema retains its place on foreign screens in December 2021 and displays values in line with those of November. If the leader of the month, The Tuches 4, attracted 113,000 spectators (326,000 for #1 the previous month, The Wolf and the Lion), a greater number of titles mobilize more than 50,000 (9 vs 4). In addition, 6 are operated in more than 10 territories (against 5).

The Wolf and the Lion

Europe captures 3 out of 4 French cinema admissions in December, the share of the western part amounting to nearly 50%. All the other geographical areas are below 100,000 admissions (North America just misses this symbolic threshold) and 10% market share. Poland is the first foreign market in number of spectators for French films in December 2021, driven by 229,000 tickets, i.e. nearly 1 admission in 5 of the total for the period. The other territory to exceed 100,000 spectators is Belgium & Luxembourg (13.3% market share). 3 of the 4 films bringing together more than 50,000 moviegoers on a market achieve this feat in Poland, while the other achieves it in Belgium & Luxembourg.

The starts of Tuche 4, Délicieux and Aline bring comedy/drama back to center stage : 1 out of 3 foreign viewers of French cinema saw a film of this genre in December 2021. The adventure follows with more than 222,000 admissions, half of which go to wolf and lion, Without forgetting give me wings. Drama and biopic/war/history have a market share above 10%: Benedetta and Eiffel exceeded 50,000 admissions, while no drama reached it this month.

French initiative films generate 90% of admissions recorded during the month of December, up on the previous month, led by two titles exceeding 100,000 tickets (The Tuches 4 and The Wolf and the Lion), then six others the 50,000. No minority production brings together more than 50,000 moviegoers: the film that stands out this month is Julie (in 12 chapters), chosen by 46,000 foreign spectators. The aforementioned title as well as The Wolf and the Lion provide foreign language productions with a share of 20.6%, reduced by more than half in one month. French-language films are gaining ground and account for almost 80% of the monthly result.

The saga being highly appreciated by the public, it goes without saying that The Tuches 4 was eagerly awaited in the neighboring French-speaking markets, mainly in Belgium. The closure of cinemas across the country for a few days certainly impacted the film’s box office, but the public was back as soon as they reopened. 100,000 Belgians have already discovered it (Alternative Films), which makes it the second best French result on this market in 2021 after Kaamelott – First part (Belga Films – 122 000). The Wolf and the Lion continued its good momentum and crossed half a million tickets internationally, including 202,000 in Poland (Kino Swiat). Monolith Films launches give me wings and Around the world in 80 days on the screens of the country and they shine within the local top 5: a few weeks of exploitation allowed them to become respectively the second and third most viewed French films of 2021 in this Eastern country. Thanks to Titanium (Altitude Film), majority French-language productions are back in the UK & Irish top 10 15 months later Wretched (Altitude Film – £178,000, 25,500 admissions). The Palme d’Or achieved its best European start in this market (£167,000, 24,000 admissions). In Oceania, Palace Film perpetuates the tradition by offering a French production for Boxing Day (December 26). In 2021, the ambassador is Delicious which has already accounted for AU$741,000, previews and festival appearances included, which corresponds to around 52,000 admissions (NZ$262,000 and 10,000 admissions in New Zealand).

Thanks to a nice rebound at the end of the year, driven in particular by “Spider-Man: no way home”, attendance at French cinemas held up rather well in an economic situation that remains marked by the health crisis. Ticket sales total just over 96 million units in 2021, according to provisional data compiled by the National Cinema Center (CNC). This reflects a rebound of 47% compared to 2020, a year even more affected by the confinements.

Compared to 2019, however, cinema attendance remains down a marked 55%. Even if with 20.43 million admissions, “the month of December recorded attendance close to normal (22.68 million in 2019, 21.5 million in 2018)”, says the CNC. The film “Spider-Man” alone totaled 5 million tickets, bought in particular by young people, and saved the end of the year. This performance shows that audiences who are not very worried about the Covid are ready to return to theaters.

Better than elsewhere

“By way of comparison, according to ComScore, and based on figures as of December 21, France is the country with the least significant drop in cinema attendance among the five major European countries, just ahead of Great Britain and Spain. . It is also less important than that observed in the United States”, welcomes the CNC.

In 2021, the pandemic has forced theaters to close 138 days, put gauges in place, adhere to curfews when reopening May 19 through June 30, and finally check health passes from of July 21. During the more “normal” months of the year, attendance held up better: “If we consider the opening period alone, from 1is June to December 31, 2021, cinema attendance reached 93 million admissions: the decline was then limited to 23% compared to the same period of 2019, which was the second best year in terms of attendance since 1966”, calculates the CNC .

“Kaamelott”, first French film

“Spider-Man” (5 million), “James Bond” (4 million) and “Dune” (3.2 million) occupy the top three entries of the year. In 2021, the ten French films that sold the most tickets are “Kaamelott-first part” (2.7 million admissions, fourth overall), “BAC Nord” (2.2 million), “Les Tuche 4 (2.0 million), “OSS 117: Red alert in black Africa” (1.6 million), “Les Bodin’s in Thailand” (1.5 million), “Eiffel” (1.5 million), “Aline (1.3 million), “Black Box” (1.2 million), “The Wolf and the Lion” (1.2 million) and “Lost Illusions” (0.8 million).

The French cinema market share remains at a good level of 41%, compared to 45% in 2020, and 35% in 2019. That of American films remains stable compared to last year at 42%, compared to 54% in 2019 .

Premiers reports

At the dawn of 2022, however, it is a certain wait-and-see attitude that dominates in the cinema world, as the Covid epidemic starts again. The sector still remembers the horrors of 2020, when many films had been postponed or broadcast on the platforms.

For the time being, the major distributors seem to be maintaining their schedules, but the situation remains very fragile, with a few announcements that have worried the sector. For example, Gaumont announced a few days ago the postponement of the release of two of its films. Initially scheduled for January 19, “Rumba la vie”, a comedy by Franck Dubosc, with Louna Espinosa and Jean-Pierre Darroussin, has been postponed to August 24, 2022. Another film to see its release date shifted, “J’adore ce que you do”, by Philippe Guillard, which will be in theaters on May 18 against initially March 30.

Independent distributors worried

Independent French cinema is particularly vulnerable. “All distributors are in a state of great excitement. Releasing a film is a high-risk exercise at the moment, explains Hélène Herschel, general delegate of the National Federation of Film Editors (FNEF). If there were new restrictions, it would be catastrophic. The films released in recent months have not been profitable given the gauges, the introduction of the health pass, etc. And that poses problems for future films, since the rounds are done well in advance…”

The loss of public linked to the establishment of the health pass is estimated at 50 million in revenue for exhibitors and distributors. “If we take into account the taxes, we arrive at a loss of 20 million for the distributors. However, it was only compensated up to 5.5 million by state aid, ”continues Hélène Herschel.

However, output lags remain limited, even if no one can predict what will happen next. “The enthusiasm on the part of a younger and more popular audience reminds us that cinema in theaters is more than ever the favorite cultural pastime of the French and allows us to envisage the months and years to come more serenely, despite the evolutions difficult to predict,” said the National Federation of French Cinemas (FNCF) on Thursday in a press release.
